I knew Abbey was bad but...

Okay so I will try and make this post clear but will be hard as I'm so angry right now.

Basically I am a part time poker player and came into alot of money in May. I managed to win over £70k(obv brag). I know this was stupid to keep it all in my account but I'm young and although I was in the process of moving money around I still remain an idiot.

Okay so fast forward to 11pm tonight where I decide to check my balance online. There is only 9k missing...awesome. I check my statement and see three separate transactions that were made today. The first one was a £40 deposit into my account at a branch not too far from me. The second one was a £4500 withdrawal from Preston....yes that's all it says on my statement!!! The third one was another £4500 withdrawal from Leyland, which is apparently in Preston??

I'm so confused as to how this has managed to happen, literally have no idea. How the f*** did Abbey allow this to happen???

So i immediately call up and the lovely lady on the phone states that I cannot put a stop on my accouny right now and that I'd have to wait until the morning to call the fraud dept, lol congrats Abbey.....this is brilliant customer service right here!!! It is only 9k after all.....

I tell the lady on the phone that I would transfer all the remaining funds from my account into other peoples. She agrees this could be a good idea. I still have £25k in my account though which hasn't gone through yet which is worrying.

I'm really looking for you guys advice here, I am at a loss for words how this could have happened...I'm pretty sure that Abbey branches have allowed someone to walk in and take £4500 in the same day in over the counter transcations. The £40 deposit was clearly related to the fraudulent activity in some way.

I live in London btw, must be over 4hours from Preston..........god I hope i get this sorted ASAP.

Sorry for the rant guys, just steaming.

hey, just calm down - banks have CCTV and you can surely prove you were ermmm, nowhere near Preston at the time right? i.e. were you at work or with someone or somewhere that has CCTV that would verify your whereabouts?

If so you have nothing to worry about! If you were in bed all day then it may be slower - either way, Abbey should be demanding proof of ID (only Passport or Driving Licence) for that size counter transaction and if they failed to request or check it they could get done themselves by the FSO......

I'd just ring and complain, but good luck whatever you decide to do.

A good number to ring, main complaints centre, is: 01908 741263.

    Address:

It would usually be better to leave it in an account than to hide it under the bed. I would suggest having a savings account to stash the cash in though!

    Leyland is near to Preston.

Somebody has managed to get hold of your account details.

Somebody has convinced them that they are you. Have you ever believed something that wasn't true? It would appear that two Abbey cashiers (probably earning peanuts) did.

    I do find that extraordinary!

    Looks that way to me.

    Two things to do.

    1) Report the fraud to the Abbey
    2) Report it to the police too - they probably won't be interested but they should issue you with a confirmation number to say that you've told them

It may take a few weeks for Abbey to investigate things, but I would expect you to be fully re-imbursed.

Puruse it with Abbey, record dates, times and names when conversations take place and, despite the stress, be relatively patient. Make the call before the branches open at 9am today though.

  • yes, they are! couple of months ago I paid in £100 at the counter. My statement showed £100 in, but then £350 out. Cashier accidently gave out £350 to the next customer without changing the screen from my details. Obviously not checking his id then!!

2 weeks later, withdrew £10 at the counter as forgot my card, get a call 2 days later from the bank saying they accidently put £10 in rather than take it out, can they have it back.... told them to go and whistle. never heard from them again!

2 seperate branches, 2 seperate cashiers. 1 useless company.

Okay so just gave Abbey a ring, and was told that the fraud dept will contact me on Monday. I have transferred all the money out of my account now so I am not worrying too much right now.

The funny thing is every other week I will deposit numberous amounts of money on to online poker sites, I will then receive a phone call from Abbey asking me to verify these transactions immediately. Fast forward to two huge withdrawals and I receive no phone verification!!!!

Thanks for all the advice so far, will provide an update on Monday if anyone is interested!!!

    Have a nice weekend.

TBH on reading this forums there isn't a good bank!

I've had accounts from Abbey, RBS, HBOS, Nationwide amongst others- not had a major problem with them.

I think lot of it is just luck.

I agree - there are a lot of HSBC fans out there and probs more on here! To me they are numero uno but then like Inactive and others, we've never had issues so course we'll say that!

    Please elaborate on this.
