    Time for a new hard disk drive, perhaps? Before you do that though, try using a live CD to see if anything else is broken.

    About £30 the D600 is an old machine so maybe speak to friends who may have a spare 30gb one knocking around that you try out before buying one yourself.

    All the information you need in order to find one can be found somewhere in this thread, but if you'd rather have someone recommend a particular distribution I suggest you try Xubuntu.

    Simply download the ISO, burn the image to CD and plop it into the laptop's disc drive. When you restart the machine, press [F12] during POST and choose the drive with the disc in it from the menu.
