I suggest you run a disk integrity check. Go to StartRun, type chkdsk /r and hit [Enter].

oooh so far it is up to segment 18164 and saying unreadable

its NTFS would that make any difference?

If the drive head has struck the platter, it doesn't matter what file system you're using: the damage is permanent, and will grow progressively worse each time the drive is used.

well guess the hard drive is naggered then... but I still can't work out why it starts but wont connect to the wireless internet....

if I could get the internet to work then I guess I could just replace the h/d???

but then not sure how I would load a dell OS disc on as its not the orig h/drive....

You could try a zero-fill as a last resort, but then you wouldn't have an operating system.

    Ever considered Linux?

Which virus scanner are you using?

Check the wireless card and antenna pigtails are seated correctly, then

Image it, (if you can), then you don't need the os disc.

    Woah, slow down, slow down.....

What router do you have? and what wireless card?
If it's an Intel 2200bg, then your going to have problems with certain wireless routers. It's a known compatibility issue.

It's possible that some of the data required for the smooth running of your wireless card is in the unreadable segment. If the card is looking fine as per Tanglefoot's post above #12, then maybe you try re-installing the drivers and software.

Probably when you got your router there would have been a Cat 5 cable in the box, use that to connect the laptop and download the drivers from the dell website.

Then order a new HDD pronto;)

the wi fi card is under a cover on the back of the laptop. It is doubtful that this has been damaged. Restart the router, If you have a cat5 cable then connect with that to the internet. If there is still a problem then it may be the router, try another lapto por pc. . As for the hdd , if it 4-5 yrs old then it is likely to have errors on it anyway.
If you have a live linux cd , boot up on that and see if you have a connection? No changes will be made to your laptop.

Just passing through, but I have to say that most Dell laptops are drop tested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jKLa6KTheU by themselves of course, and obviously the design ensures that they stay alive for the most part, unless your wife twirled it around her head and bounced it off 3 others surfaces before it hit the floor.

Also, you could perhaps try as Wakandem has suggested a 'Live CD' or Live USB linux distro:

    Linux CD
    http://www.livecdlist.com/purpose/os-installation

    Pendrive Linux
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

It's worth pointing out that linux tends to just connect, so will find the router negotiate the protocols and then ... connect, yes it really is that easy.

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
