  • I don't want to be alarmist, but everyone who completed house purchases with Wolstenholmes please take the time to check to see if your property is:

    a) registered in your name; and
    b) that there are no other charges secured against your property other than the bank/building society with which you have your mortgage.

Tis can be done either online by looking on the Land Registry website and paying a fee and downloading the record or via post or phone.

Amongst absconding with people's monies Wolstenholmes have alleged to have secured loans/mortgages against properties for which they held the title deeds for. I suggest you check that yours has the right securities against it.

Could you be more specific as to what you mean....do you mean they never paid off 2nd charges or are you suggesting they raised money against properties.....or is this scaremongering....

Scaremongering..... I am suggesting that people check their title deeds as we already know that not everyone's property is registered to them in their name.

You still haven't answered the question then..."do you mean they never paid off 2nd charges or are you suggesting they raised money against properties"

The suggestion is they raised additional funds against properties. But for peace of mind check your paperwork or as previously advised.

You're not being alarmist at all - you're doing the SRA's job for them as surely they should be writing to everyone who has used Wolstenholmes for conveyancing in the recent past to warn them to check out all the paperwork. I'm not involved in this - just following this thread as there is nothing about this in the MSM even though so many house buyers/sellers seem to be involved. Have you considered contacting Tony Hetheringon, a financial investigative journalist who works for the Mail on Sunday, to see if he could chivvy things along for you?

May I suggest that anyone who is concerned about this rings the Land Registry. I have phoned them several times to check the title to the property I purchased. Although the property is still not in my name I always make sure that the search has been extended by my present soliciter. I think the property is then protected as the purchaser is named as having an interest in the property. When I instructed a new solicitor it was the first thing she made sure of.

I have always found the Land Registry to be most helpful.

This seems highly unlikely as paperwork etc would have to go to the owner's address ...so if that was the case people would be alerted immediately if something fraudlent was occurring...

Please don't think I don't have empathy for all affected...

You are assuming addresses were recorded correctly. When it comes to Wolstenholmes assume nothing.
