People like me, a first time buyer, had no guidance as to how much legal fees were supposed to be. On my research I didn't come across the £99 conveyancing they offered, I came across Wolstenholmes on their comparison site and was quoted over £500.
Not everyone is as clued up as you think people should be.0 -

It all depends on what the perception of the going rate is. When I started in practice 30 years ago, the average purchase of price of a 2/3 bedroom semi was £16,500 an an average fee would be £200 ie over 1% of the price. Estate agents uniformly charged 1.5% and tended to compete on how much advertising was included in the price.
Now, an average conveyancing fee would be £600 on a purchase at £180,000 ie. 0.33 % of the price of the house and a quarter of the fee from 30 years ago. This has been brought about by relentless price competition and a perception that anything more than a figure quoted on the internet is a rip off. Needless to say, the estate agents are still charging 1.5%. Because few people understand the procedures involved, it's easy to pass conveyancing off as a bit of form filling that can be done by pretty well anyone for virtually nothing.
It seems that part of the WH strategy was to use several brandnames and websites that acted to corrall those seeking the lowest price into their arms. The clients only discovered when it was too late that the service was a lot more expensive than they had realised and the work had been done poorly if at all. Unlike a conventional firm WH was not bothered about keeping clients satisfied so they came back and in the meantime recommended the firm to others. They knew that they'd only act the once, but there would be a fresh catch of victims netted from the internet tomorrow.0 -
I am disappointed your mortgage advisor did not cover off with you everything/fees that is involved in the house buying process......0

I am absulutly sick of all of it!!!!!!.
The criticisms from people who have no idea what each individual paid WH. Who have know idea of the stress we are all under and the effect this has had on people's lives (our lives). People who dip into the forum just to smirk and criticise should go somewhere else.
This problem has been created by Solicitors, Solicitors stepped in to close down the Solicitors, then created an even bigger mess, they then passed the files (god knows what happened to the bulk of the information as it was on the computers) to yet another lot of Solicitors, then we are pointed in the direction of yet more Solicitors by them.
And god forbid if everyone else is in my position those solicitors are milking it for all it's worth.
The only winners in all of this are guess what THE SOLICITORS!!!!!!!!
So anyone that feels they have the right to criticize P... Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
Also I was not aware that this forum was open to people who joined just so that they could drum up business0
