What we do in our house is the kids open the presents from santa and each other the presents under the tree waits until after dinner and we all sit round and it gets passed round saying this is for .. from... and kids loved it, but now they are older they miss it as they tend to get money or vouchers.

One year we woke up to find only 1 box each under the tree. It was a red box with a green lid and 2 catches that locked it and were about 3 foot long and maybe 2 foot high.

My mum sat us down and said:
''Look money has been really tight this year. We thought we would get you all something to store your junk in''

They werent even wrapped just plonked under the tree. She said we had to eat breakfast before we took them upstairs then we could all go and tidy our rooms now we had something to put everything in.

We sat eating our cereal holding back the tears, there were NO other presents anywhere to be seen.

We went into the living room to pick our boxes up and they were well heavy, so we opened them and there were LOADS of presents inside - there were woops of joy right then. Then hidden behind the sofa my mum pulled out loads os santa sacks with presents from the rest of the family.

My mum and dad almost wet themselves laughing, at the time we thought it was mean and nasty but now that we are older we can see the funny side of it.

My bedroom was never a mess again.
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!

Oh my god, that is so funny, i've been chuckling for ages. Thanks for sharing :rotfl::rotfl:
I'm sure if I did that to my daughter, she would of totally flipped .... big tantrum .... mind you, she is only 5.
A creative mess is better than tidy idleness :D
  • Hey everyone....

I'm a total newbie to the forums, although have been receiving the MSE newsletter for ages! I'm a poor student and looking for gift ideas for my Mum's birthday.... think i'm gonna go for a multi aperture frame with pics of my sister's new baby. Should be able to do that for less than a tenner in Tesco!

Anyway.... does anyone want to refer to this bingoport you've been on about? If you get some points I won't be accused of letting them go to waste? It sounds a little too good to be true, is there a down side?

    Thanks!!!

Oh that made me laugh, sorry I bet you were devastated on the day until you got your pressies, reminds me of what my aunt and uncle did to my cousion, he wanted a playstation, (when they first come out) and said he only wanted that nothing else. So thats what they got him. But they made him wait for it, they wrapped the empty box up and hid the rest of the stuff in his messy bedroom :rotfl: for him to find.

Thanks for all the great ideas and shared madness of planning for xmas in August! I'm just glad I have other people to share with as my friends/family in real life think I'm mad! I'm currently decorating so not much time for xmas shopping yet. I've got a list of jobs to do before xmas as we are having EVERYONE staying here for the duration:eek:

I have a question about hampers - everyone talks about wrapping the cellophane to keep everything together and attractive, do you then wrap them in wrapping paper as well? Or put it in a box? Or would you hide it and then present them with it at the right moment?

When I was a kid anything upstairs in stocking/sacks had come from Santa but anything downstairs under the tree was from relatives and had name tag etc on. Those presents slowly appear over the week or so before the big day. We've carried this on with our kids so they can open their stocking (and eat the chocolate:o) as soon as they wake up and they are generally smaller pressies. My OH family had the tradition of large special breakfast so we do that now as well, the kids have to wait til after breakfast to open their main presents. When I was a kid we used to wolf down a piece of toast and then rip the presents over now we have bucks fizz, crossiants, toast, ham, etc so it all adds to the anticipation. Then chaos begins as the kids attack their pile. We usually have lunch late about 2.30/3.00ish as we had a large breakfast and no doubt lots of chocs!:T

    Hi Everyone :hello: :hello: :hello:

Well I've come to a bit of a stand still with the christmas hunt.

I'm loving the idea of doing hampers for everyone but am stuck on what to put in them. If anyone can help I have the following people to get for

Mum - not into pampering, has more smellies than boots, she works a lot and goes out at the weekend. She hates stopping in after losing my stepdad 2 years ago. Normal presents include a bottle of opium (my SD use to give a bottle of this every year so I have carried on doing it), dvds - I've just bought her the latest ghost whisperer for her birthday in 2 weeks though and pj's, budget of £50

Dad and Step Mum - They go away in their motor home a lot, i wanted to get them something for this but I'm stuck what to get them for it, they also enjoy cooking, travelling abroad, budget of £40

Nan - hates smellies, hates flowers, hates chocolate (her words not mine!!) likes to whinge a lot though, budget of £15

Nan and Grandad - They go away in their caravan a lot, like The National Trust, my grandad loves red wine, my nan use to do cross stitch, flower arranging but has stopped now because of her co-ordination - Budget of £30

Cousin - 11 years old. I have no idea what he likes as he lives in London with my aunt and any time I ask her for a suggestion I get told - anything will be ok, budget of £15

Sister - Still has the smellies that I sent her 2 years ago wrapped in her room, she doesn't go out as they can't afford, she lives for her kids and NEVER treats herself, she will be starting her first ever job as a volunteer teaching assistant in September, budget of £15

OH Mum - Am going to do a pamper hamper for her - have bought the following - Soaps, Candles, Exfoliating Mitten, Back Scrubber/Massager but am stuck at what to put in now, budget of £30

OH Dad - am at a complete loss, he likes everything for 2 minutes then moves onto the next time - budget of £30

OH Sister and BIL - Have just bought a new blu ray player was going to do a night in hamper - to include the following, blue ray disc, popcorn, wine, chocolates, popcorn - can anyone thing of anything else - budget of £30

I read all through the pot of gold thread last night and still can't decide what whether to do snowman soup or pot of gold so will probably end up doing both (pot of gold for adults, soup for kids) I have seen some disposable icing tubes on ebay but I think they have writing on them, is lakeland the only other place that you can get them??

Sorry for all my questions and thanks in advance
