Reclaiming PPI from GE money/Santander. Help!?

  • My wife had a Debenhams Store Card which was opened back in about 1995 and wanted to claim back the PPI insurance.
Have contacted Santander Card Service but they no longer have no record of the card. When they were first contacted they stated that there was no PPI element added to the account with a further letter stating they have no record of the account on their system.
The PPi was sold via a sales person in a Debenhams store.
When a claim was made via the insurance company, which we do not details of, the insurance company refused to pay out for her operation of carpal tunnel syndrome on left hand some 5 years after taking the insurance.
Therefore the insurance was not suitable for her needs.
We have contacted the financial ombudsman with no success. They cannot do anything without knowing the insurance company.
Does anyone know who the insurers were?

    Hi there

Santander will provide you the details of the underwriter on request.
They did with me, and mine was Genworth.
There maybe a different underwriter in your case though, but Santander will let you know the details on request.

I wrote to Santander earlier this year about PPI that may be on my Credit Card. (£1 for every £100 payment protection)

They wrote back stating that PPI has not been applied to my card.

Today, just received a statement of PPI charges that I have paid during the past year. (The first statement of it's kind in the 10 yr+ that I've had this card).

So the letter received from them stating that I did not have PPI was a lie !

    No, an error.
If you now want to make a mis-selling complaint, be sure to include a copy of the letter claiming you didn't have PPI.

    Letter sent..... requesting....
    • Policy to be stopped promptly
    • Refund of the past year's PPI payments (statement enclosed)
    • Refund of all previous years payments (giving eight weeks)
    • Explaination of why I was informed in July that my account did not have PPI

Instead of a list of demands, why didn't you just complain using the Ombudsman template from this site?
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-credit-card-insurance

Also, you do realise that it isn't enough to merely have a PPI policy? In order to successfully complain it needs to have been mis-sold to you.
Other than being told you didn't have PPI when you did, what mis-selling complaint reasons do you have?

    Response from Santander;
    • No refund to be given as I was aware of the PPI when taking out the card 12 years ago. Payment charges clearly indicated on statements
    • Don't believe I was mis-sold
    • Stopped the PPI policy as instructed

(No mention of why I was informed that my card did not have PPI)

This is their final decision, and matter now closed !

Oh well, guess its not worth pursuing any further.
  • I'm in the middle (nearly 1 year since launching my claim!) of a ppi claim, using a "no win, no fee" company to try and get ppi money back from Santander for an old Burtons store card account which I took out in 1999. I have had no end of trouble with Santander dragging their heels on this and being obstreperous.

First, they wrote to my OLD address where i haven't lived for almost a decade, rather than the one i now live at and sent my reclaim notice from. Luckily, my parents still live there and could pass on my mail.

Second, they said that they hadn't received an appropriate Letter of Authority so they couldn't deal with the PPI claim company on my behalf. I had signed a Letter of Authority provided by the claims company, and subsequent to this response from Santander, provided another signed document saying i want the claims company to act on my behalf. I've just had ANOTHER letter from Santander saying that they still haven't had an appropriate letter of authority - What do they want? a letter written in blood????

Third, Santander said i needed to prove that I was not working over 16hours a week at the time of opening the store card and PPI, as I had put this in my reclaim letter. So, i diligently contacted the Inland Revenue for tax details of what i paid that year to prove i was indeed in full-time education and not in work (so was ineligible to have PPI). NOW, they want me to prove that I didn't have a partner at the time of taking out the PPI because they say it was a "breadwinner's policy". I was single at the time, so the only proof i can think of is my marriage license which was 8 years after the event.

Fourth, each time they write to me, Santander say that they "have now reached the end of our internal complaint handling procedures". It seems that any more contact i have with them restarts the whole process over again and is taking months and months.

Any advice you can give to crack this nut would be welcome. Is it time to call in the Ombudsman as they really are giving me the run around.

Big mistake this as evidenced by the "runaround" you've been given. Shouldn't your claims handler be dealing with all this red tape so you don't have to? I assure you that (should you ever be successful) your CMC will still require their 25% (plus VAT) of anything you receive.

Sounds like you'll have to take this to the Ombudsman. However, if Santander have already given their first "full and final" response more than six months ago then this avenue may already be closed to you.
  • Not sure if I'm in the right place or not but maybe someone can help.
I used to have an Evans storecard which was through G E money. I found out Santander had taken over GE money so rang them to ask about PPI which I knew I had paid on the card.I dont have the card now but was able to give Santander some of the details they wanted. They checked and confirmed I had indeed paid PPI and said they'd put through all the info to their complaints dept and I would hear back from them. That was nearly 3 weeks ago. Can anyone tell me roughly how long it is before they contact you?
    Thanks.
