Those over 40 need to be careful about the kind of carbs and the amount they eat. I discovered I had a problem with bread etc. when I watched someone from the diabetic assoc. being interviewed about glucose intolerance or insulin resistance. They were talking about people who can not seem to loose weight no matter what they do and also other symptoms. I realised they were talking about me so experimented with cutting down drasticly on bread, rice, pasta and potatoes. I lost a stone slowly without doing anything else. I now make wholemeal bread, eat smaller portions of carbs and although I have not lost much more weight I have more energy.
If i did not have sleep problems (unrelated)I would feel loads better. Friday night was so noisy outside I did not get much sleep all night. We had the lot from people slamming car doors and saying goodbye loudly to a girl sobbing that she could not find her way home and several drunken lads walking home talking loud at different times and finally a drunk old man shouting to himself. Moving to the back of the house is not an option as its just as bad that side.
  • I have just ordered something very expensive (but neccessary to the self sufficient lifestyle)to be delivered from USA and it's all Grandmas fault:p

We didn't spend as much on our hols as expected so i have a canner en route and hubby has a diesel engine ordered(he builds posh model planes) and we have enough money left for a weekend away still. Mostly down to all the attractions we visited in Wales being free so thanks CADW!

Hopefully it will arrive just before the tomatoes..................

wow another one. Customs will wonder what the heck is going on here.
You will love it. I sat and made a list of food I want to can yesterday to have some ready made meals on hand. The best thing about it is you can control what goes in it.
EDIT: you will both be saying in your sleep " I need more jars,I need more jars."
  • Grandma I like the idea i can save freezer space and have meals ready to eat without cooking or defrosting off over to the canning forum now for inspiration!

SM not sure where i read about your pasta machine and ravioli attachment but you can make it without one by using sheets of pasta and a small pastry cutter but am sure you alredy know this ;). Did you see the cook do the hedgerow ravioli last week Valentine whatsisface on the what to eat show? He also put cornmeal in the dough ................last time i made pasta was at catering college and i hate to admit i prefer dried:o

yet another courgette based meal for tea here :rotfl::rotfl:

Other frugal things, I had been planning to buy a pedometer, but I found one in my drawer the other day! :j so I've been wearing it each day to see how many steps I average. So far its been around 15,000 each day so that's better than the recommended amount so I'm pleased with that. I've been trying to get fitter, and lose weight, and I haven't really lost any weight so far, but I'm hopefully getting a bit fitter. Its frustrating when the scales don't go down, but I'm trying to do it the healthy way this time :)
Wow... I'm not sure I've ever made it to 15,000 steps! :o Unless I'm running around at work (I can occasionally get to ~12,000 on days I'm doing a prep and western blotting) I usually have to walk at least ~30-45 mins on the way home from work to get anywhere near 10,000. I managed a whole 6000 yesterday as I didn't walk home... :o
Taka, am loving the sound of the notebook - what make is it? :)

Taka, I somehow missed your post yesterday, but that was brilliant about the notebook! It's like getting it free when you look at how it was paid :) Well done!
:D Its this one... I love it! Its tiny (smaller than an A4 page flat) but just over an inch thick with a 93% of normal sized keyboard so is really comfy to use with my big fingers. No DVD/CD drive as its a netbook but we've bought a family one between 3 of us for when we do need one.

I just need to get wireless sorted for it as I've locked myself out of my internet box! :o Not to worry - I'm switching broadband providers hopefully on Thurs (touch wood it goes through ok - my new box has already arrived!) so should be able to wander my flat with it (or more likely veg on the sofa!)! :rotfl:

What is even better my new package is just over £5 a month cheaper with 2 months free! :D Sadly the £50 cashback was not to be for switching... Their website refused my bank details (I tried 3 different current accounts about a million times :wall:  very odd...) Hrumph....! Oh well saving me £60+ a year is not to be sniffed at! Thanks 0range for increasing my costs from £12-72/month to £19.99/month   and finally giving me the kick up my behind I needed to change providers! :rotfl: £7 odd a month sounds far better to me especially with no download limit (well a fair use policy)! :D I was always scared of going over with 0range by the time I downloaded several BBC iPlayer programmes a week to my MP3 player to watch on boring bus journeys + general surfing. I did have to change mobile providers (painless, better reception at work AND cheaper! :j) to get this for £7 odd a month but I only need to top up my pay as you go mobile by £10 every 3 months and thats probably more than I'll use as I hardly ever use my mobile (and cheaper than paying an extra £5 a month for broadband)!
    Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

  • LOL shaz - well you held out for about... 10 days? Seems to me a pretty essential kit for those going hardcore with home produce:D

SF - it was a lemon drizzle cake - my default cake as people seem to like it so much.

Grandma - didn't realise we lived in the same street! ZZzzzzzzzzzz.

Todays frugal finds are 2 large pine square solid boxes, dived into 9 compartments as if for CD's which will be perfetc for kitchen stage/spices etc, going begging by a dustbin in the street.

taka - bails blog isn't up and running yet - she's looking into it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
