Buying school uniforms

hi

my little girl starts school this september.

the question is, how much uniform should I buy?

She is only 4 so can still be quite messy and I work so will not always be able to wash clothes every night.

Do you think that 2 sweaters, 2 cardigans, 2 skirts, 1 dress, 1 pair of trousers and 4 blouses/shirts will be enough.

Seems like such a pointless thing to post about but how much are you all planning to buy?

Definitely sounds like enough to me.

With DD who is now 6, if what she wears comes home clean then she wears it another day (this seems to be happening more now she gets a bit older), although we still have days when she comes home stinking . All you need is a clean set for the following day while you wash and dry the dirty ones.

Btw, what sort of dress do you mean? Gingham summer type or pinafore which can really be worn all year round? Maybe one of each is an idea.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • Thanks for the reply. I mean a pinafore. I will get the gingham summer ones next summer when she may have outgrown the stuff I got her in September anyway.

Maybe I will think about getting 3 of everything then. I am sure that I will be washing frequently enough - I also have a 2 year old and a very mucky husband! (I mean he makes a mess, not that he is mucky in other ways! ha ha).

    Sounds like too much!!

I would buy 1 sweater, 1 cardi, 1 skirt, 1 pinafore, 2 gingham dresses, 1 trousers and 5 shirts. I say five shirts because it is a real nusance if you get to Friday morning and you realise that she has no clean shirts to wear!

You can always buy more during the term if you find that she wears more of one thing than the other.

Don't forget the socks, shoes and trainers!

Way too much! What you need in multiple numbers are polo tops and maybe 1 smart shirt (short sleeve - do not buy long sleeve!)

Also cardie over jumpers anytime (think about PE and DC undressing, think about hair staying neat etc)

i bought a uniform for each day, so five trousers, and jumpers and we had 8 polo shirts (they came in packs of 4), but at asdas prices it was cheap enough to do, though we only bought one pair of school shoes - not that he wears them hes always in his trainers.

It might seem like a chore but do label items because they do go missing a lot especially in the first 3yrs of primary (they get a *bit* more responsible after that)

Might be able to get away with just 1 pair of shoe up till Yr.1 but thereafter you need at least 2 in rotation per term because they WILL get busted!

I use a fine Sharpie pen to put names on the label tags of uniforms. Sharpie ink is waterproof and never washes out - the name stays in all school year. And when I hand them down or give them away I just cut of the label.

I would definately agree with buying enough shirts/polo tops for a week. I would also ask if she prefers skirts or trousers as my little one decided she didnt like skirts after the first week and never wore them again as non of the other girls did.

    Hi OP
My DD started school last September and I think what you have brought already should be fine.
I think maybe go a bit lighter on the sweaters and cardi's and perhaps buy another skirt or pinafore and a couple more blouses.

My DD tends to get lunch/something on her skirt/blouse far more frequently than she ever does on her school jumper :D

Don't forget PE kit - I have found that it's handy to have 2 sets as mine bring this home for me to wash every Friday and it isn't always done by the Monday so handy to have another kit ready
