I wish my children's school would let them bring them home less frequently than every week - as you say they are not dirty and smelly just a little creased (my children are only 5 and 6 years old)
I don't see the need to wash them every week

Really? We get ours back at the end of every half term! They never seem dirty though, although occasionally bits are 'missing' and when asked, my LO casually announces they've been gone 'for weeks'! Last time, it was one of her plimsolls and she'd been doing PE in her shoes for ages!

Yes I'm not sure why they have to go home each week - but it's school rules apparently
It's a real pain and it's even easier to forget the PE kits on a Monday morning which need to be kept in school until Friday
DD struggles to carry in her PE kit, book bag and lunchbox every Monday - she is tiny and I have to load her up and sort of balance it out and hope she doesn't drop anything! :D
  • Hi all - wow - what a hot topic!

Many thanks for the info on yo-toy shoes. I think I will defo tell her that they don't have her size! bad mummy grrrr!

Also, I went to Tesco today and got some stuff. I had doubled up on mu club card points and got a £10 voucher for clothes. Then on Tuesday I ended up taking a piece of meat back to tesco cos it was minging and they gave me a refund plus a £5 gift card.

So went to tesco armed with my £15 of vouchers. Got 2 dresses, 2 skirts, a pair of trousers and 6 polo shirts. All on 3 for 2. For the grand price of vouchers plus 25p!

All plenty big enough for growing room.

Just the book bag, motiffed cardis, pe kit and sarnie box to buy. Oh, and her normal clarkes shoes.

Anyone know where I can get a hello kitty sarnie box?

Thanks for all of thr replies

H&M do lots of Hello Kitty stuff and they're pretty reasonable - if you have one near you.

hi everyone, was reading through the thread and had to laugh, in my experience with my DD it doesnt matter how much of anything you have you are gonna have to get more at the most inappropriate times. like the toes of the school shoes come apart from the soles the day before payday, or the washing machine breaks down and thats the week she chooses to fall over in mud, spill lunch down the entire front of the uniform, burst a hole in the knee of the trousers, and redecorate the school shirt with pen that will not wash off (i swear this was all in the same week that the washing machine broke)

and putting their name on things only helps a little, in her first year at school, there was a day my DD came home with one gym shoe, the next time she brought home 2 different sizes, then the next it was 3 shoes with 3 different names in them, although 2 of these were the same size they wouldnt make a pair cos they were both for the left foot lol. she lost tons of cardis cos the school always had the heating turned up really high and she always took the cardi off, i just stopped buying them. i would definately go with the short sleeved shirts though, and always keep one shirt and skirt/ trousers fresh in the wrapper, just in case you get told at 8 o clock at night that there will be photos taken the next day or the day before payday the entire uniform is ruined lol

Labelling all the school stuff can make life MUCH easier. If your child has a book bag which will be put in a box every day at school, you can tie a small coloured ribbon onto it for easy identification.
For PE pumps, the problem is often getting them on the correct feet - you can help with this by putting the pumps together on the floor, then drawing a smiley face inside with a permanent pen (half a face in each shoe, if you see what I mean); just show your child how to make the smiley face, then step into the pumps. Also a heart shape works well - colour it in if you have coloured permanent pens.
Don't know if your child will need a painting shirt - when my DS1 went to school, I made a painting shirt that he could manage easily. Got a soft check age 8 shirt from a jumble sale and cut off the collar and zigzaggedthe raw edges, cut off the cuffs, turned the sleeves over, put elastic in, and cut off the buttons and replaced with dots of velcro. Very easy to put on and take off, covered him easily and held his sleeves well out of the way. Don't forget to name it clearly as other children will be wishing they had one!
If you have more than one child and decide to go for the woven name tapes idea, one MSE method is to have just your surname put on them but twice on each - not "Emma Jackson" but "Jackson Jackson"...that way you can cut each one in half and sew in just the surname, thus avoiding having to remove "Emma Jackson" and replace it with "Rosie Jackson". Or some people have the name tapes done with, "Emma Jackson Rosie" and cut off whichever end does not apply.
I have a deep loathing of sewing in name tapes but when I do, a cunning method makes it easier: instead of tucking the ends of the tapes under and sewing them in (very fiddly), I cut the ends off, then use a lighter to melt the edges of the cut tape until it seals itself. It's basically the method you can use on ribbons or bootlaces.
I am probably a lunatic but these little things keep me happy!

I would probably end up burning my house down if I did this :o:D.

    Do you drive to school?

If it were me, I'd take out the stuff, fold it up, and then leave it in the car until Monday.

If I walked I'd do the same but put it in her reading bag.

You are right; they don't need washing every week and I wouldn't bother personally.

DD has enough uniform to last 2 weeks... She started off with polo shirts and pinafores, but then Adams had blouses reduced to ridiculous amounts before they closed at christmas so I got her some of those and some Asda trousers and skirts for a change... Yes it's a lot but it was a godsend whilst pregnant and unable to wash and iron it all the time... (If she comes home and it's clean it gets worn again too)
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

Usually I drive yes - she and my son both have a book bag which is crammed full and a logo PE bag with her PE top and her shorts and trainers which wouldn't fit in the book bag unfortunately.

I don't wash them every week - only if they need it - I take them out and refold as you suggest but I may try and remember to keep them in the car - that way I won't forget come Monday morning :T
