Milkman - is the bain of my life!!

Then he gave up his round so Dairy took the round over, then said dairy went bust ( from what i was told) So NO Milkman started to buy from shops.
Then 3 weeks ago another dairy canvased the area. OK i said i will give it a go.
Recieved a call from thier Head office to confirm order and was told they would start to deliver on the Monday. ( just in case i bought 2 litre )
well Monday came and Great the Milkman delivered, next due date was Wednesday NO milk, just as well i had reserve in. next due date Friday NO milk. thought right he should be knocking for Money tonight.
Well that was 2 weeks ago and Nothing No phone call, no collection no milkman or float.
SO i GIVE UP - supermarket milk it is to be

interesting thread! ive never given much thought to the other issues. my mum insists n a milkman as she says you have to suport them as it is a needed service for old people.
dp started ordering from the milk man as we were always running out and i thought it was not going to work, however it is working well, 1 pint a day and two on a wednesday and sat to account for days off. I think the recycling issues is important and the moneysaving of the amount of times we had to go out just for milk..but wouod always buy something else as well

I don't have a milkman but I do go into Asda and come out with only what I went in for.

  • On radio 4 this morning it was pointed out that organic milk carries a premium in supermarkets to help subsidise the discount on ordinary milk. So buying organic milk in supermarkets actually encourages the type of farming we try to avoid by buying organic in the first place.

I'm looking for a delivery scheme now.

My milkman only delivers 4 days a week, and as I have 8 pints delivered on a Monday, I have 4pt poly bottles delivered. I have 20 pints a week which qualifies for a quantity discount, so I pay about 43p per pint.
Our local council recycles the bottles, but my main gripe is the "food miles" my milk travels. I live in Somerset which still has lots of dairy herds so you would imagine that my milk comes from "just down the road". My milkman informed me that local milk may be heat-treated at any of a number of locations in the SW, BUT it is ferried to the Isle of Wight for bottling! Then back to the main distribution depot in Bristol, local distribution depot in Devon and then back to Somerset! This only applies to poly bottles as far as I know and I would love to change back to glass bottles, but can't store 8 pints all at once.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • Does anyone know where to get the plastic tops to go on top of milk bottles? I have been looking everywhere for them.

Also, has anyone tried the Medip Hills Mature cheddar sold by Dairy Crest?

I also just saw on their web site that they do 45m of silver foil for £1.95 which seems a very good buy. I'm having a look to see what kind of other things like eggs I can get.

We have been having our milk delivered for about the last six months. It is mainly just used by my OH for his tea, so we only have a couple of pints and some juice. We had a bit of a wobble at the beginning because I was told that they would deliver about 6 in the morning in the week when I questioned the guy who knocked at our door to see if we were interested. However the milk didn't appear until after we had left at seven (I wanted one pint on a Sat and one on a Weds). So now we just have two pints on the Saturday and they are in date for the week so there is no problem.

I carry on with the delivery really just to support the service for those who rely on it.

I think it depends on where you live, but I am in Bexleyheath at the edge of London and I think we are paying 51p a pint for skimmed. It went up a few pence the other week.

Here in Cambridge it's 50p a pint for full cream milk.
