Long term Sky Digital subscriber looking for more

Hello

I have been with Sky Digital for nearly 10 years and in that time I have moved home once (and sky made me pay installation charge!)

I have only ever had the same package, which I think is about £21 a month.

I have no telephone line (disconnected my BT line 4 years ago) although socket is still live.

Basically as priority I am looking to get a phone line in order to have free (base) sky broadband.

How best to do this?

Get BT to reactivate the line (12 month min term) and then order skytalk without line rental and then base broadband for free?

Or get Sky to re-activate the line and pay rental to them and get free base?

Another factor (hence reason I have posted in TV forum) is that i am wondering if this is also an opportunity to get a free Sky+ upgrade from Sky since I am still on my original standard sky box from day one!! My dish only has a single LNB so I would require Sky to come and upgrade this aswell as a new box. Getting all this free sounds too good to be true but what do you think? Should I threaten to cancel? Should I do this before or after ordering phone/broadband?

any help appreciated

thanks

Darren

Given your length of service one would hope that Sky would be keen to keep you. Might be worth calling them and advising what you would like and see what they'll offer. Then you'll be in a position to see whether the cancellation route is worth trying. I've heard that there's an availability issue with Sky + at the moment so even if they do agree to the upgrade you may be in for a bit of a wait.

Have you still got dialling tone when you plug phone in socket. If not you could well face a reconnection charge from BT or Sky.

I presume it still has a dial tone but I need to get hold of a telephone to check.

It still had one for atleast a year after I had it disconnected - might it have changed then?

    Hi

Sadly no joy with BT - I have phoned them and as its been 4 years since the line was connected an engineer visit is required and a installation charge of £122.50.

I understand there is an 18 month contract option but I cannot afford to risk whether or not I make 10 chargeable calls a month - esspecially since I am only going to be using the line for broadband.

    What a rip off

Did you ask Sky? Post Office do a line rental option too - may not be such a high connection charge.

I telephoned Sky and they told me that they would not connect an inactive line - the line must be active with another provider before they will take it over. They recommended taking out a post office deal for 1 month and then switching to Sky.

Can't see any information on post office website about connecting new lines though....

I have found out that talktalk are now offering new line installations for £59.99 when taking a broadband+line rental package (£17.74 per month) and subscribing for 24 month contract.

Best option may well be to pay the £122 connection and then take sky's free base broadband

This is getting worst - basically I am now looking at £182 before I even start!

    £122 bt connection fee
£60 sky broadband base connection fee

The free connection 18 month contact offer has been extended,
but in post 5 the op says he does not want an 18 month option.;)
