Leaving dogs at home and going on holiday.

Just wondering what folk make of this situation. Someone I know has just gone abroad for a week leaving their dogs at home. They are let out twice a day. They have to do a 10 and 14 hour shift.

Many of you know i take a fairly pragmatic approach to my dogs but I feel this is pretty bad. I do have an axe to grind with this person on an other issue and just wanted to know if others thought it was acceptable or not? Or am I letting personal animosity colour my judgement?

To be fair as long as someone is going to see them then what is the problem? If they were left in most kennels they wouldn't get much more than that. When we go away we leave the dog with parents in law and couldn't bear to leave her in kennels pricesly as she would be locked up all day.

I would not be happy leaving my dogs alone for that amount of time, whatever breed they are. Obviously some breeds would need a lot more excercise then just being let out in the garden and this also depends on their age.

I wouldn't go on holiday if I couldn't have someone living in my home with my dogs...they are part of my family. I wouldn't leave my child home alone either...

Thats an absolute disgrace!...... What if they get sick and no one finds them for hours?... Any decent kennel would walk them a fair ammount each day.... poor poor dogs..... I wouldnt EVER do it with my guys!!!

That is disgusting .... especially in the heat we are supposed to be having this week.

I have never left a dog of mine for longer than two hours at a time ... never. As for holidays ... I don't go unless I can take my dog. Having had a number of dogs who have pined terribly when I have left them with family members, I made a conscious decision that if I were to get another dog I have the responsibility of his welfare so if he can't come with me, I don't go .. simple!!
Okay, I know that doesn't work for everyone and there are families with kids who like to go away ... every circumstance is different but to lock an animal up alone all those hours is disgusting ... people get into trouble for leaving their pets in the car for an hour when it is hot - how come it is okay for them to do it all those hours and leave them in the house?

I would never use kennels, but even if they were in kennels, while they wouldn't neccessarily be out and walked numerous times a day, they would still be kept an eye on, especially in high temperatures ... drinking water changed frequently etc ...

I'm afraid I would be phoning the RSPCA and saying I was concerned for the dogs being indoors alone all that time in such warm weather ...

These people will have blooming well deserved it if they come home to the house having been wrecked by the dogs out of boredom ... gggrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

I agree with Louise that most reputable kennels would exercise the dogs regularly.

Once again shows just how selfish some people can be... holiday abroad but won't spend money on making sure their animals are well cared for. Makes me wonder why some people even have animals when they really just don't seem to care!

Thanks for the responses, mrcol does raise a valid point about how much attention would they really get at kennels. In many ways i would like to call the SSPCA but with other (potential legal) issues I feel this would be just seen as vindictive.

I think what is making me more cross than anything is I'm being such a wimp on the issue.

No they are not walked but then again they never are!

What it comes down to is that there isn't that many laws to say you can't leave your dog miserable on its own all day. Its usually the way it responds to this that gets you in trouble (noise complaints from the dog barking all day). To be honest as well there are dogs that are treated a lot worse than being left all day. Sadly its way too easy to get a dog especially if your willing to pay. Blame the breeders who knock out dogs like they are a commodity.
