  • Hi all you doggie lovers, I would not leave my dog for that amount of time everyday. On the subject of RSPCA and new law for Animal WElfare I am involved with germanshepherdrescue.co.uk and there is an ongiong case of 3 shepherds tethered all day no food no water no shelter in snow / heat and RSPCA have said this is acceptable. Please have a look at the website and maybe sign the petition .....dont know if this is allowed on here ....sincere apologies if not but there are lives at risk here !!!
Thank you to all and also from Bruno , fluffy and new pup (also tethered):A

Also, this is the same neighbour who reported me to the Council for having a bonfire on November the 5th....for having a party for my nephews birthday that caused too much noise (he's 2 and it finished at 1700hrs)....the list goes on....I think that they don't even respond to her calls anymore as I am the least complained about by her...You should hear what the other neighbours have been subject to!!!

She sounds a bundle of fun!

I've left my dogs at home whilst on holiday, they had a dog sitter visiting 3 times a day, for an hour each time.

    BUT....

They had access to the kitchen which is where their sofa is, and had free access to the garden which is VERY secure and has a kennel if they choose to snooze outside. The sitter fed them (and the cats) and walked them on the beach each day. I left a weeks supply of stuffed activity toys and enough treat to last them a year! As I work my dogs are used to spending time on their own, which is why I have multiple dogs they can keep each other company and amused. All have been to kennels before and I'm sure they had a better time being left at home in familiar surroundings with a sitter they have known for about a year.

Would I do it again? Yes, I like my holidays! And I love my dogs. And I've worked hard to ensure that my dogs are independant and stable enough to cope without me for a while.

Would I leave my dogs in the same situation as described in the first post - HELL NO!
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

I think the dogs are being left too long on their own. What if something were to happen to one of them? Even in kennels I am sure no dog would go that length of time without someone at least looking at them.

I think the owners are being selfish. Can they not afford for their dogs to go to decent kennels, or to a dog minder or have a dog sitter stay in their house? As you say, they can afford a holiday abroad so they should be spending money to make sure their dogs are looked after properly.

People say I spoil my dog but my view is that I chose to have a dog and he is now my responsibility. If I choose to go on holiday or go out for a day or a evening it is up to me to make sure he is ok just as you would a child.

I prefer holidays with my dog but if he cannot come with me I make sure he goes to a good kennel where he is happy. If I cannot afford kennels and a holiday then I either choose a cheaper holiday or go without. My dog is more important!

I always leave Mia in kennels when we go away, I spent months finding her the best kennels in the area, she isnt locked up all day, they walk her twice a day and she gets completely spoiled as its a small family run kennel where she has gone since she was a pup. It is expensive but its worth it.
I would never leave her in the house all day never mind for a week!

We havent been on holiday together for many years now unless we can take our dogs with us. We go on our own if its abroad and in this country we find somewhere the boys can enjoy too. Its not that hard and Id rather have them with us than worry about them being in a kennels - slightly more difficult for us because one is disabled and I dont know how he would cope.

Having said that, the RSPCA would not be interested in a complaint about these two. They are housed, they are fed, they are given exercise - they wont take it any further.

Thanks for the responses, mrcol does raise a valid point about how much attention would they really get at kennels. In many ways i would like to call the SSPCA but with other (potential legal) issues I feel this would be just seen as vindictive.

I think what is making me more cross than anything is I'm being such a wimp on the issue.

No they are not walked but then again they never are!

There is nothing vindictive in ringing rspca, its not right full stop, if you think this is wrong, in your heart you know whats for the best
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

my mother worked as a dogsitter, and after seeing how much more relaxed vsiting dogs were in this situation as opposed to kennels, I'd have no hesitation in tracking down a reputable dogsitter myself when I'm in a position to get a dog/dogs of my own...basically, the dogs stay with someone, who also takes in other dogs (there is a limit, though) and sleeps where they would at home (at least this is how my mother worked it). A lot of the "regulars" saw it as a home away from home and I think the owners were more worried than the dogs were, tbh. lol. This way they're not left in kennels, which lets face it is an alien environment for most house dogs, get regular walks, lots of social interaction and play and usually improve their manners as a result :).

I haven't replied to this thread for awhile. I'm afraid I will not be doing anything about it. I will assume at this stage it was a one off.
The reason for taking no action is that we are in a land dispute with them and I am still trying to find an amicable solution.

Interestingly they have gone off again (with the dogs this time) but windows are still open and I can only surmise that there has been a family emergency or similar.
