Thought this thread sounded a bit dodgy. I detest private companies pretending to be official bodies and the same goes for private security and charities dressing up in official looking police style uniforms. It's all a con and wrong. This thread should be turned into a warning with the link removed, rather than drum up business for those rip off artists.0

Ohh - interesting stuff!!!!!!!!
Wonder how the Royal Mint managed that!!!!!!!!
It is to do with the new design. If you look at the old design, it is unlike most British coinage in that the date is on the tails side - in this case on either side of the rose emblem. Therefore they didn't include the date on the heads side on the coin. With the new design, there is no space for the date on the tails, so it had to be put on the heads site which is slightly redesigned to fit it in.
What happened in this case, is they minted some coins with the new front (with no date), but the old back (also with no date) resulting in some dateless coins which no-one noticed until they had got into circulation. As collectors love little !!!!-ups like these they are (to the collectors) worth more than their face value.0 -
If you read the Sky News report it is very misleading. They obviously are not aware its a private company offering to buy these coins not the Royal Mint.
Also its only the first 10,000 people who will get £50. I guess they reckon they can only shift 10,000 of them at a profit.0 -
About twenty years ago I had a holiday job in the change booth of an amusement arcade, this was before the new ten and five pence coins had been introduced. The manager told me that some old coins had a high silver content and asked me to let him know if I found any so he could 'buy' them from the till. Needless to say I didn't find any. However I'm now wondering if it's worth trying to get my old job back for a couple of weeks!
p.s. I didn't get rich. The oldest coin I didn't find was a 1916 Shilling which is now worth about a fiver. The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us
Baby we were born to walk0
