Read it works in a few places note it will only charge via USB if some Windows only software is loaded.

    Thanks seth.
Got more than enough books for now from gutenburg and the free cd.
Bit disappointed with the official ebooks being so expensive - wouldn't mind as much for new books, but £6 upwards for older books is a massive rip-off!!!

I agreed the prices for all ebooks are a rip off. I've seen hardbacks cost less than ebooks.

Amazon are selling out of copyright book collections for 99cents in the USA this is for folk using their Kindle.

I think the MSE approach would be to use the free versions. If found another site with good free books also support Sony's format LRF directly. http://manybooks.net and http://www.mobileread.com

Not sure I thought this was a gadget (that is the section on Play this is under) and that is 4%

    Mine has just arrived :)

Found this post with some interesting tips on RSS feeds, games how to use this device with book collections etc/

I have no Sony Software installed on my old XP Laptop and it seems to charge via USB.

Will try on my new Laptop (Ubuntu) and report back.

It might be the new firmware 1.1 has added USB charging without the need for Sony software.

I've not added any custom firmware this is with the firmware install on the device when it arrived.

IIRC as long as the connected machine can see the device (and it's seen as a mass storage device i think) it should charge.

Basically it needs a working data connection, so not a problem for windows XP, or windows Vista 32 bit with any firmware version on the reader, but potentially a problem for Windows 9x or Windows Vista 64, and possibly some Mac OS versions with early firmware versions.

I've charged mine on both my main machine (Vista 64, and calibre software on the machine), and on my older XP PC with no special software (sony or otherwise) - and the reader is still running the same firmware it had when I bought it (IIRC all the EU models use a later firmware than originally shipped with the early US versions).
