Another vote here for Ikea flat pack furniture.
I have had stuff from Argos and MFI in the past:o ( I know - but we were broke and this was before Ikea appeared)
I would NEVER buy their flat pack stuff again.
Comparing the thickness of the 'wood/mdf' etc, Ikeas are usually a good 50% thicker than Argos - which obviously makes them sturdier and also heavier.
Overall VERY impressed with Ikea quality, although often not as cheap as they were - so check out ebay, where I have bought loads of ikea furniture in the past few years.
This has included assembled chests of drawers which I have been able to get home in the back of my hatchback, manhandle it upstairs, and it is still rock solid and looks great !!

Ikea stuff is easier to assemble and the pieces actually fit together....but I have one sofa from Argos (leather two seater for 150) and one from Ikea (fabric two seater for 69) and I much prefer the Argos one...but I also have bookcases from Ikea and Argos and Ikea wins every time.

    Another Ikea vote!!!

Ikea regularly have Billy Bookcases in bargain corner, so make that your first stop.

I have a row of Billy bookcases that are about 14 years old and have been through three house moves. The back boards ocassionally need a couple of more tacks but they still look great.

DH is currently putting some Ikea bedroom furniture together as I type.

We have had Argos bedroom furniture previously which was awful quality.

The drawers are being assembled and they are very sturdy. We decided on Ikea for the quality and the storage systems that they have, you can have whatever you want in the wardrobes and therefore you can spend as much or as little as you want according to your needs.

Big thumbs up so far for Ikea:dance:

As a general rule the only things that are cheap at Argos are either cheap and nasty, or reduced to clear.

As for Ikea the quality isn't good on many products, but a few items seem to be quite sturdy.
  • I would also recommend Ikea for Billy bookcases. I have one that has been moved and is still just as sturdy. My very very cheap computer desk also came from Ikea, my son often stands on it to reach the router. I wish he wouldn't but it is still just as good as 2 years ago. Having said that I bought a high metal sleeper form Argos, it was cheaper than Ikea, has survived a change of bedrooms and was delivered. I couldn't get that in my small car.
When I bought the bed I bought the rest of the beech and metal furniture from B&Q, no problems with that either. We do occasionally have to tighten the screw on the bed but that's all. I think you just have to do a bit of research. See who has the sturdiest, cheapest. And factor in transpoting it.

We've gradually (almost done!) got the furniture in this house into the Leksvik Ikea range and it's brilliant... survived house moves/dismantling/oh's assembly atempts (typical male - doesn't read the instructions half the time) and it's really solidly designed. The one bit that isn't the most awesome is the TV cabinet - but our TV is incredibly heavy so I can't really blame it there... one bookshelf was suffering a bit after the 6th house move we did but it's been repaired and is fine again now... some stuff in there I wouldn't buy but generally its outlasted any other sources of flat pack stuff I've bought over the years.

Having said that - we live nearer to Ikea in terms of being able to get to one easily without having to prat around with city centres, than we do to Argos.

Indeed, Leksvik range is constructed in solid wood so is really sturdy.
From personal experience I'd recommend the Leksvig, Billy/Benno, and Pax (wardrobe) ranges. The Poang chairs are really comfortable for the price in fact they rock!!
