I totally accept that paracetamol and asprin are controlled for sale, but I have never yet been able to find the legislation that restricts the sale of ibuprofen. My local Mr T. swears blind that it exists and refuses to sell me 16 paracetamol and 16 nurofen at the same time. If they are going to enfore the law, and no one is arguing otherwise, I wish they would get it right!

If I am wrong on this I'd love to be pointed in the right direction, ;)

This is a money saving forum.

Why buy expensive Nurofen when the active ingredient is Ibuprofen which can be purchased at around a fifth of the price ?

The Poundshop are currently doing 3x16 200mg Ibuprofen for £1 and I have seen single 16 packs in Home Bargains for 25p.

Beg to differ. I am sure that Tesco believe they have good reason to introduce and enforce this policy - but somehow, I doubt that's all that much to do with fair shopping. Call me cynical (or a plonker, for that matter), but the fact that the value baked beans are probably loss leaders kinda makes a lot more sense to me.

Yes, I get the special offer argument - they are there to lure the customers in, so of course they will not let anyone have more than a few. But with value baked beans - that is the price they have set to match the price of the value baked beans in all other supermarkets, and as they paying customer, do I give a toss if they make no money on them ? Do I heck.

Now, see, I grew up in a socialist country, and lived through a war, so I actually really, truly, deeply "get" the idea of making sure there is enough food to go around. I get the community spirit and growing your own and relying on friends and neighbours to make sure no one goes any shorter than anyone else.

And this, m'dear, ain't it. This is free market and profit chasing, and as a paying customer, what I care about is the shop meeting my needs. I do a big shop about every six weeks and buy enough non-perishables to last the course. 16 tins of beans would have been enough - ten ain't. Therefore, Tesco fail to meet my needs as a customer.

We never normally shop there, anyway - we only went as we were lured in by their willingness to lose £5 off our money by letting us use the Morrison's vouchers. To then lose that for the sake of a 6 tins of beans - still, I'm sure that no one at Tesco's will lose any sleep over losing our custom ;)

Yes, I take the point that supermarkets aren't cash and carrys - if we had a cash and carry within reach, I'd far prefer to shop in them anyway. I really can't see how buying a tray of beans for a family of 3 qualifies as treating a supermarket like a cash and carry, though. Furthermore, there were no signs anywhere to let us know that what we were doing was against policy - just the cashier saying sorry, I can't let you have more than 10 of those tins. Poor customer service there, sorry. And when the other half (that's the plonker) asked if he could get the remaining 6 tins and put them through as a different transaction, she said no way, you have to go back into the store and get six different tins instead.

Actually, poor customer service does not being to cover it. We went to Asda instead :p

This is the one thing I don't get. People buy branded food because they think the brands taste better, people buy branded washing up liquid because people think you don't need to use as much, people get insurance from companies they've heard of because they think they're more reliable, the list goes on. However there is absolutely no way that cheap medicine with the same active ingredient could be less effective unless someone was lying on their packaging. Forget everything Martin says about PPI, branded medicine is the ultimate con.

My mum is 100% guilty of always going for branded or supermarket posh brand, yet even she buys unbranded Costco Paracetamol.

(Sorry for straying off topic btw :p)

I was told by a Tesco delivery driver that the reason you are limited to 10 of a certain item is because if you buy more than that they are classed as a wholesalers.

It is annoying though, I like to stock up while things are on offer.
