My dh has cut through the outside sky cable when trimming tree, are sky the only people to fix this or would just an electrician be able to do it? Sorry if this is on the wrong thread I couldn't decide if it was technical diy or this one.

Thanks

He could repair it himself, he will need 2 "f " connectors and a male back to back " f " connector and a small piece of self amalgamating tape to waterproof the join.

Any TV Aerial contractor would do the job.

As mentioned it's easy enough to fix, however make very sure that the outer conductors do not touch the inner one (the cabling carries a very low voltage to let the lnb tune in correctly*), as that will result in the box not being able to tune in, and could damage the STB.

*which is why you need one LNB+Wire per channel beng tuned into, unlike TV aerials where you can just split the signal to allow more tuners.

To join a cable you need a threaded connector and two F plugs, plus some self-amalgamating tape to seal the connection from weather.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I cut through the cable once and it blew a fuse in the box. Repairing the cable might not be enough, get an expert in.

I'd renew the entire length of cable. It's not that expensive and it also means you won't have a joint outdoors exposed to all sorts of weather. The joint is also a weakness in the cable and could reduce your signal strength.
Joining the cable is as simple as others have said - Maplins or any other electronics store will sell connectors. If you're unsure then tell them it's for a sky cable and they'll supply the right parts.

    Hi

Thanks for all of your replies - it seems we need to get sky out as it's sky plus and the double wire they use isn't available generally :-(

    expensive.?

is there no slack in the cable, nip down to maplins and tell them what you have done, then you will come away with the right connectors for under £5.00.

Oh yes - I just trusted the electrician was right - just had a look - we are really not very practical people so doing it ourselves is not an option. Just wondering about ringing an ariel person see what they thing - he did say it may have blown something inthe dish - would an ariel person be able to do that? i realise I sound a bit thick 0 or may nip to maplins - they may show me how to do it too if im lucky

If you're not comfortable with DIY then perhaps getting someone in would be wise, especially if any of it involves working at heights. The actual fix should be easy/straightforward however as someone pointed out there is a chance a fuse may have gone inside your set top box - the dish/lnb should be unharmed. I'd suggest unplugging and not using your box until the damage is repaired.
