People can cope find with a little education - they will not be asked to undertake rocket science, merely to do things in a different way. You're acting as if they're being asked to learn a new language, in a minimum of five years' time.

You do not see the digital switch over slowing down for fears that the elderly could not operate a digital set-top box.

I hardly think that the Banks will be forced to give the same level of education and funding to those that need it, as is being given by the broadcasters for the digital switch over, nor will it be over the same kind of extended time span.

    Not a realistic comparison.

Hmm... the UK digital switchover started in 2007 and is staggered to run until 2012. That's five years.

The earliest possible end for cheque guarantees alone will be 2011, likely later. That's two years away. So we can reasonably expect the demise of cheques to take another two/three years there after at the very least, so it will be over five years.

You can also expect educational campaigns from the BBA, APACS, the banks themselves, and the Government - a la the introduction of Chip & PIN. Why wouldn't they? This is a much more significant change, and educating customers would be a very easy way to avoid high complaint levels.

Doesn't sound so bad to me.

    I see it now!

Cheques are like the Woolworths of the banking world. Hardly anybody uses them, except old people and a nostalgic few that refuse to use Amazon even though there is money to be saved.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

So then, following that logic, the campaign should have started now, I don't recall seeing any publicity / education about it, nor I suspect are we likely to until about 6 months before the event.

I was addressing your statement around time span.

Regarding education, there is a little amount that needs to be done - a short list of the alternatives and how to carry them out.

How do you imagine said education would take place? What is your ideal time frame? How do you envisage it taking more than six months?

I was simply addressing your poor comparison with the digital switchover, which as you correctly stated will be taking a 5 year time frame, something that the cheque removal will not.

Allthough it has far more serious implications for some people.

I closed my HBOS account and had a credit balance, they sent me a cheque! Oh, by the way it was an old easycash account and you know what, no branch facilities so that meant I couldn;t go into the branch and withdraw it - the bank dictated to me they would send a cheque.

Also, just had a complaint cheque from Abbey sent for £75.

Guess i'm trying to point out the banks are issuing them willy-nilly so how do they expect us to learn? Lead by example comes to mind......

Indeed, as well as many Building Societes insisting on cheques to open new accounts.

Yea, I had that too with my ISA - could only send a cheque, not transfer as they had to see it came from my account and not someone elses. I even asked, if I wanted to fiddle it I could do so - get someone else to pay into my account, then write you a cheque - same thing! LOL - banks eh?:confused::confused:
