Horrendous data charges compared to the Asda version though 20p <>£4 MB

True but the service is aimed at low phone/text users.

I'd swop straight away if they reduced data charges to ASDA or even Virgin rates but £4 per MB is ridiculous.

The tariff is not intended for data users, and Tesco are not trying to attract them.;)

I still have a sim on the old Tesco Value tariff, is there any disadvantage in changing to this new Tesco PAYG lite tariff?

Well it's slightly cheaper than the Value tariff (which was IIRC 15p calls and 5p texts), plus are Value customers still restricted as to how they can top up? On the new tariff you get the full range of top-up options.

Sorry I just realised you said DISadvantages(!) silly me!

Not that I can really see to be honest, except that you probably can't switch back to the Value tariff if you wanted to for whatever reason...

Also I spotted this in the FAQ's:

Q: Are there any numbers barred on the Lite tariff?

    A: Yes, the following number ranges barred include 076, 070, 07744 or 07755, 078225, 079879, 078730, 078931, 079118, 079112, 078930, 078921, 077000, 079245, 079246, but are subject to change.

I think these are those personal numbering services that they use in hospitals, for instance, that look like a mobile number but are charged at extortionate rates. So if you call these then watch out. I don't see why they just don't charge them at a higher rate, really, except for simplicity I guess?

Those numbers which are mainly used by cheap call suppliers would be barred on any tariff.

    Two more advantages.:D

    You can send MMS messages.
    Voicemail is only 8p.

Ah right....and the Asda tariff they copied is aimed at.......?

If they had better call and text rates and worse data rates I could understand your comment, as it stands a 'competitor' has the same rates for calls and text and better data rates, what is their target market?
