Who should be able to buy property?

All house price discussions centre on whether or not house prices are really affordable at current levels, or have much further to fall. Some have tried to argue that affordability based on average incomes is irrelevant, as only a select and undefined group of people 'should - in their minds - be able to buy property.

So who should this group of potential property owners consist of?

Any one should be able to buy what they can afford.

I do not think that there is any entitlement to own.

Also I do not think there is any minimum size entitlement. Some may never be able to afford what they desire.

Personally, I don't think property ownership should be limited to the well off - after all, there are lots of extremely below average areas and properties.

I think in areas like London where only the far above average can afford to buy currently, prices will have to fall a long way until it hits normal affordability.

    Them, probably carol!!

I think an average working couple on an average salary should, at the very least, be able to comfortably afford a modest 2 bed home. An average working single should comfortably afford a modest 1 bed home. To start off with. And as they progress up the career ladder, they should be able to trade up to a larger property when they can afford more.

There's a whole lot of snobbery about the subject really. Had the naysayers had their way, I would never have bought in 1999 for the first time. But I did because then it was actually affordable for normal average people to buy. My money was good enough then. I don't think its right that the same money from the same type of person shouldn't be good enough now.

Why do house prices have to go up exponentially anyway? Why can't they stay the same and just go up with inflation/wages over the years?

I think its wrong that something so fundamental as a roof over our head has been taken over by greedy people in some kind of neverending materialistic race to nowhere.

I am sure lots of people think they 'should' be able to buy a four bedroom detached home in a good area, just as they should have an interesting, enjoyable job, good health and good work/life balance. You can't legislate on such things so pretty meaningless really, particularly when we face a severe and (likely) long term downturn with readjustments for most of us.

    I chose other.

Anyone that can afford to buy.
If they can't afford to buy, then they have to look at different area / types of properties, save more, work to earn more.

All of these are better in my opinion than waiting and hoping for the property type / area you want to change to suit your personal situation.
