Removing tax disc from part exchange when dealer needs to drive it away?

Whenver I've traded in one car for another I've always left the tax disc in the car.0

If the dealer has inspected your car (and the same tax disc was in the window) or asked you how much tax was left on then they will of factored in the value of the tax disc into their valuation of the part exchange. By all means have a pop at keeping it but its not really fair on the dealership....its exactly like taking a car to be valued with a new set of alloys and tyres, to then replace them with some sh!tty old wheels with repo's on them when it comes to handover.
If however they haven't done either of those take it out and politely remind them to bring trade plates as your car is not taxed.0 -
As dealers can no longer cash in tax on part ex cars I would take it off and cash it in yourself .:beer: Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

Unless the dealer was taking your car away on the last day of the month, would'nt it still be taxed even if you had kept the disc.
He may get a ticking off from the police if he was stopped, for not displaying a disc but so long as you could show it still had cover i'd imagine he would'nt get done for the vehicle being untaxed.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

I didnt know that. Why cant they?
http://www.motortrader.com/industry-news/car-dealer-news/28015-car-dealers-hit-by-new-tax-hike.html..."Under the new regulations it appears that dealers can only obtain a refund when they are declared the registered owner of the vehicle and they have declared the vehicle Sorn,"
he said.
...
"I don't believe dealer networks realise the full implications. Customers trading-in cars at dealers will have to cash the tax in themselves and declare the car Sorn which will mean the dealer cannot then demonstrate the car on trade plates as they currently do....
However, I don't quite follow that arguement.
All (registered) vehicles either have to be taxed or sorn. Trade plates traditionally allowed car dealers to use otherwise untaxed cars legally on a public highway.
Does declaring a car as sorn really prohibit its use on a road under trade plates? How would anyone check? If the trade plates are correctly displayed, then the vehicles registration number will be obsured.
Does this mean trade plates can only now be used on new, unregistered vehicles?
Edit: Ah, it appears the issue arises out of the SORN rules.
To get a VED refund, you must decalre the vehicle as SORN.
You can only declare the vehicle as SORN if you are the registered keeper.
Motor traders have dispensation to not declare vehicles as SORN as long as they are only temporarily in their custody
Trade plates issued to motor traders can only be used on vehicles temporarily in their custody
SORN - a guide for motor traders
Trade licences - guidence notes
So either the trader registers the vehicle in their name, adding an additional keeper to the log book and preventing them from using their trade plates on the vehicle, or they can't cash in the VED."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
