Removing tax disc from part exchange when dealer needs to drive it away?
Options
I am having my (nearly) new car delivered to me on Friday, and am going to be trading in my old car at the same time. I have 9 months road-tax left on the current tax disc, which I would like to reclaim, so I'd like to remove the tax disc before handing it over to the dealer. However, since I assume he will be intending to drive the old car back to where he came from (his dealership is about 2hrs away), I am not sure whether I can get away with removing the disc. I'm guessing he'll say (possibly accurately) that he needs the disc or he can't legally drive the car back.
Does anyone know whether there is an exemption to cover dealers driving cars with trade plates, that means they don't need a valid tax disc? I have searched for an answer, but can't find anything.
Many thanks!

Trade plates are taxed and insured, this is the type of situation they are intended for.0

Just what I hoped to hear. Thank you.0

Depends what you agreed when you did the deal. Sometimes the paperwork will specifiy you have to leave the tax on (and the radio in the car).
If its not been mentioned, take it off. Its their problem then...0 -
Best to read this site:

My refund cheque for my previous car just arrived today. I left the car with the dealer and took my tax disc with me, on the advice given on this forum about a month ago.
Don't leave it with the dealer or it will be lost.0 -
yeah dont fall for any promises of them sending it away for you etc etc
whip it out before they get there0 -
Was the trade in deal agreed, with or without the tax left on?
If with ..leave it on
If without..take it off0 -
1) If you visited the dealer to agree the trade in and the car was inspected with tax then unless its specifically noted as excluded leave it in.
2) If trade in was agreed electronically/phone with no note re tax take it out.0 -

I didn't make any agreement with the dealer, in fact at the handover it was the person dealing with the paperwork who reminded me to remove the tax disc.

How's the new car being delivered to you? On the back of a trailer or being "nicely" () run in by some delivery driver?
It might be worth giving the dealer a ring to check and if being driven, remind the dealer that the driver needs trade plates to take the part-ex away (presuming no other agreement on tax was reached at time of deal)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Has the dealer seen the trade in?0
