You commit the offence of speeding at ANY speed over the limit..in this case 61mph, however the guidelines on when prosecution becomes appropriate are normally 10% + 2mph over , so 68mph in this case...but they are only guidelines - not law.
The next step (if you are not stopped at the time) will be a Notice of Intended Prosecution (known as a NIP) which needs to be sent to the registered keeper within 14 days of the offence (where the day of the offence is counted as day 0).0 -
I would get hold of a GPS and see exactly what your speedo reads this might put your mind at rest. An indicated 70 on your speedo is likely to be 65 or so in reality.0

they are not meant to, but they still do. Even on new cars. If you want to try it out, get a satnav which displays your exact speed...you'll find your speedo will display 70, yet in reality you're doing 66mph or 71mph, it depends on the car.0 -
Even if you were caught you may not receive a ticket as sometimes the offices which deal with issuing NIPs are so busy they only post out a percentage.Middlers0

I have always believed it to be 10% allowance, but am not sure.
As to the advice re. the Sat Nav speed, often they are not as accurate as you may think they are. Remember precise locations are being beamed up into space and back, so there is no way you can get absolutely dead on results.
If you are really tied up about testing your speed, buy a radar yourself, tune it then test, but really there is no need (the police will do that for you lol)

Hi,
Was driving to work my mind started to wonder like everyones does when you make the same journey every day!
However i was doing 70 (about 150-100m away) through mobile speed camera van, then slammed brakes on down to 60 (which is speed limit!)
What do you guys think?
ThanksI must, I must, get my post average up to 1 a day!!0 -

Remember that the speedo should always over read your speed0 -
I've got a fantastic device for my car which stops me getting speeding tickets anywhere in Europe and I think that It'll work in other places in the world as well. It fits on the dashboard and the 'men in blue' can't prosecute you for having one (not even in France). It's called a speedometer, your vehicles manufacturer might even be able to supply one.0

it was only a matter of time wasnt it?
i wonder if a speed related thread will ever get into page 2 before someone makes an anal comment like this?...work permit granted!0 -
The speedo on my car reads around 6.5% below the 'real' speed throughout its range (well up to around 100mph.
I have plugged a test box into the onboard test socket (fitted to all cars since the early 90s I think) and this indicates a lower 'real' speed than the indicated speed; so the manufacturers have put a fudge factor into it. From what I have read it protects them from you claiming their speedo caused you to break the speed limit.
I have also tried a couple of GPS systems in the same car and they agree with the test box as to the cars 'real' speed (GPS is not totally accurate due to many different factors but it does not transmit signals to space, just receives them)
At the end of the day it's out of you hands now anyway just wait to see :-)0
