Remember that the speedo should always over read your speedI must, I must, get my post average up to 1 a day!!0 -
All areas that are part of a Safety Camera Partnership (which I believe is now all areas) will give the allowance of 10% + 2 MPH. This should be used as a safety net and not an increase in the speed limit.
Car Speedos can by law show upto 11% over the real speed but nothing below it. Various factors will effect the accuracy such as tyre tread (they actually get more accurate as you wear them down !! ) and wear and tear on the speedo. Peeps that like to fit non standard size wheels to there cars will also effect the accuracy.
The 2 weeks is not entirely true. They must attempt to send it in time for you to receive it within 2 weeks but if it arrives late they will use the "delay in post" or "lost / destroyed by receiver" excuses. Many court cases have been lost where the "speeder" has taken the option to go to court trying the "it was over 2 weeks" excuse. OP: Please remember that taken the matter to court and losing changes the 3 points to between 4 and 6, also the fine will be much higher to cover costs.
GPS: The accuracy of the GPS reading will be as near perfect when... a/ It has a good signal. b/ you are travelling at a constant speed (not accelarating) and c/ You are travelling on a flat road.
a/ Could cause some very strange figures.
b/ During accelaration / decellaration the GPS will have a slight delay with the speed change.
c/ GPS uses the distance you have moved forward. Just because you have travelled a mile on the road does not mean you have travelled a mile closer to your destination (place 2 items, one at either end touching a ruler laid flat on a desk, now lift one end of the ruler. Its still the same length but their is a gap between the ruler and one of the items). Except in extreme circumstances this will still mean your GPS is more accurate than the speedo.
Hassled by HGV's ??? How does this work. The HGV is most likely going to be doing as close to 50 as possible as speeding could lose him his job but he still wants to get there as quickly as possible. You stick to 50 and you will stay the same distance away from the HGV. Travel at 54 and you will catch the HGV in front causing you to "Hassle" him
My suggestion to the original poster is unless you will be banned by adding the 3 points then don't worry about it. If it arrives then pay it and learn from it, if it doesn't then bonus but still learn from it, you may not be as lucky next time.
If you already have points for speeding then you only have yourself to blame. Anybody can make the mistake once but more is stupidity.
Please don't take this as one of the preachy "well you shouldn't speed" rants. For about 8 months in the nineties I was driving with 11 points (8 for driving before I had passed my test (No Insurance, No L's, No Qualified Driver), then 3 for speeding after I had passed my test). It was only due to the copper that got me with the radar lowing the speed on the ticket (the actual speed should have got me a "Go To Court, Minimum 4 points" instead of the instant 3 points) and that the "New Drivers only get 6 points before ban" law hadn't arrived at the time that I kept my licence.
I drove very carefully until the 8 points where removed and I beleive I still drive much better since because of this.0 -

Vehicles with tachographs have to have their speedo calibrated every 2 years (in kilometres I might add) , my van was done a couple months ago, so it's bang on, so is the navman gps
When you have a calibrated speedo you realise how badly set up most of the "smiley face" type speed display signs are aswell :rolleyes:0 -

HGVs are legally limited to 56 mph or less most are on the limit at 56 so if you stay behind them at 50 they wont be the same distance away they will be getting further and further away. travel at 54 and you probably still wont catch them.
some operators have limited thier vehicles lower than 56 though, i think some of the supermarkets HGVs are limited less....work permit granted!0 -

Are you sure the limit was 60mph and not 70mph. Sorry if you do, but it's a mistake a lot of people make with dual carriageways.0
