So you will accept a 2 bed flat as a possible FTB acomodation then?
If so great, can we move on.
Its not twisting it reading.
It is twisting. I just said on a PERSONAL level I would personally never buy a flat in response to PasturesNew. It's why it had "personally" behind it.
I never discounted a 2 bed flat as a starter home.0 -

Well you have on your poll
and you do personaly.
But your average single FTB on an average wage in most places would be able to afford a 2 bed flat (excluding SE)0 -
What's wrong with a flat?
I should probably edit my post to say "purpose-built flat", better sound insulation!
Avoid old conversions as you may as well live in the same house as the neighbours. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

You want to jump the "ladder rungs".
While I understand you want to save on moves, it does contribute to pushing up demand for "average houses"
My properties went as follows: -
Rented a 1 bed flat
Bought a 2 bed self contained flat
Bought and moved to a 4 bed terraced house, sold the 2 bed flat
Moved abroad and bought a 5 bed house, converting the 4 bed into a BTL mortgage.
Bought a 2 bed flat for BTL
Keeping it to places I have lived, I've moved up the "ladder". I never could have or expected to be able to buy an average house for my first property, even joint with my wife.
Your last step; buying a 2 bed flat for BTL, stops other potential climers getting to stage 2.
Can you see the irony?

Well that's your opinion. You fail to see starter homes as starter homes.
So you see the average house is entry level.
But what if me and the Mrs want to buy our first home. Should we have to buy a [STRIKE]1 bed box[/STRIKE] starter home because its our first home. If we earn a combined average wage, and plan to get married and have kids surely we should be able to afford a 2-3 bed semi in a decent area?"For those who understand, no explanation is necessary. Those who don't understand, dont matter."0 -
First time buyers would normally be childless couples who would buy a flat, in anticipation of an easy sell when buns get put in ovens.
As the property market has locked out so many people over the last decade an ftb is now typically in their mid 30s and needing a family home.
People do have families in flats, in Japan for example. No-one wants to though.
Unfortunately this is BROKEN BRITAIN where suitable accommodation is only available for spivs, banksters, immigrant disabled minority single mothers and btl Beeny flippers.

I see what you are inferring. but I don't believe I have stopped other potential climbers.
In the area I bought, there are plenty of properties available that people could buy.
The property has been constantly leased out to people who have had no interest in buying i.e. students, people on secondment from overseas.
We've been round and round the fact that social renting has dramatically reduced, more so than private renting has increased.
You could turn around your point and say if private rentals had not increased, where would those that did not want to buy live?:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.

I never said a 1 bed would be starter for a couple, I say 2-3 bed semi or terrace. But what if me and the Mrs want to buy our first home. Should we have to buy a [STRIKE]1 bed box[/STRIKE] starter home because its our first home. If we earn a combined average wage, and plan to get married and have kids surely we should be able to afford a 2-3 bed semi in a decent area?
And yes you should be able to afford that. i am saying if you were single i think you would stuggle to buy the same property.:)0 -
Don't go off on one. i just wanted for you to clarify what home you think you would buy as a single person.
I would say the average single male wage where I live could buy you a 2 bed flat in a nice area or a 3 bed semi in a not so good area.
It was a simple question you did not want to answer.
I guess that depends on where you live.0 -
In my view, a starter home is either a flat (smallish in size) or a one bedroom house.
One bedroom houses (classed as starter homes in all the gumph) start at around 100k here..down from around 120k at peak!
Apart from the dockers and a few managers, average salary is around 16-18k here.
I've not played with the mortgage calculator though...way too busy, just had to get an assignment in and I am off to Cardiff in 10 hours! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0
