They both look like slums to me.
Do people truthfully live in such shanty areas?
LOL.
Well, I have to be reasonable with the starter home stuff.
In my mind, has to be serviceable, in that a family could start there. You can park your car, go to work etc. Absolutely no point moving into a 1 bed flat and realising you cannot progress in life without moving again.
Though some people believe that's what people should do.
I very much doubt the people believeing this, would be happy to go spend that money on those places, however.
It may look ok on rightmove, but when you are able to look around, and see not what you are living in, but whats around you, I reckon those would soon change their minds about it being good enough.0 -
I lived/worked in the area for about 2 years on/off.Graham_Devon wrote: »Honestly, if you knew the area, you wouldn't be looking at 2 of them. There is a reason they start at that price, and it's what's close to them.
I do know most of the area a bit, yeah, some dodgy bits dotted here and there...
I stayed at/lived at various addresses, St Leonards, Burnthouse Lane, Blackboy Road area and Redhills. I had a friend who was earning £50k 12 years ago that quite happily owned a house in Stoke Hill too.Graham_Devon wrote: »Most of those are taken up by students and it's very handy for commuters who work in the city, which is their main use.
Don't believe that they are starter homes to be honest, and I don't personally believe you can call them that. Even the council estate behind them have bigger flats.
I'd call this more of a starter home. I.e. allows 2 people to live together, allows for one child, allows for parking. I.e. all the things you would need to start out. I wouldn't class it as "nice" at all. I don't think that's being picky, but I do believe it's being reasonable. As to the flats thing, it's the service charges which I think would put you off, and those living in there who do not have to pay it, so all falls on you.
I call a starter home something you buy before you meet any significant other. Then you meet Mr/Ms Right, come to love each other, flog both of those and buy your first family home.
To me a starter home is your first home. Home alone.
That's not nice looking at all is it. Most odd. I never liked that big hill up that road.Graham_Devon wrote: »0 -

That's where opinions start to cause problems on threads like this.
I see no point in the home you describe above. To me, it seems like a completely needless step and a waste of time, fee's etc.
I might RENT one if I was desperate for a place to live, but you certainly wouldn't see me buying one of these places you talk about!0 -

Well that's your opinion. You fail to see starter homes as starter homes.
So you see the average house is entry level.

therefore, you are one of the people who's desires contribute to HPI.
You want to jump the "ladder rungs".
While I understand you want to save on moves, it does contribute to pushing up demand for "average houses"
My properties went as follows: -
Rented a 1 bed flat
Bought a 2 bed self contained flat
Bought and moved to a 4 bed terraced house, sold the 2 bed flat
Moved abroad and bought a 5 bed house, converting the 4 bed into a BTL mortgage.
Bought a 2 bed flat for BTL
Keeping it to places I have lived, I've moved up the "ladder". I never could have or expected to be able to buy an average house for my first property, even joint with my wife.:wall:
What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.

And that is different to what I said how?
I said I would rent a 1 bed flat, but not buy. You did the exact same.
I don't get this. People ask for your opinion. I think my opinion was reasaonble. Yet your set on for giving your opinion which was asked for.
I do not regard a bedsit / 1 bed flat a starter HOME. These places have their uses. I can't be the only one?0 -

not trying to cause offence here graham but it's your decision that you cannot get on the housing ladder.
there's a difference between getting on the housing ladder and the property that you'd like.0 -

So you will accept a 2 bed flat as a possible FTB acomodation then?
If so great, can we move on.
Its not twisting it reading.Graham_Devon wrote: »Starter home = 1-2 bed house. 2 preferably, don't really see the point in 1 beds, apart from for commuter places. I would never ever consider flats personally. But I don't live there
