I've just had my laptop returned after it had a serious meltdown. It's completely wiped and all I have is IE7
What free anti virus, firewalls etc etc. should I install?
Any advice appreciated

This will start a massive debate, but I would recommend:-
Anti-virus - Avira
Firewall - PCTools free firewall
Malwarebuytes anti-malware
Spybot Search&Destroy
Superantispyware
The last three are for getting rid of nasties that creep onto your system.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
I use AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware. My router is my firewall.Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0

What, you wait ages for one and then three turn up at once?

I'd suggest the following:
Anti-virus - Avira AntiVir
Anti-malware - Malwarebytes
Anti-spyware - SUPERAntiSpyware
The anti-virus runs all the time and the anti-spyware and anti-malware are on demand i.e. you manually start a scan.
Ensure the PC is patched properly by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Finally ensure you've got a firewall, XP / Vista's are fine.0 -
Zonealarm firewall, the company changed hands and now belongs to an Iranian company, but I still swear by it.
Hell it's what Symantec based their firewall on, except Zonealarm is free.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
