Advice on what to install

I've just had my laptop returned after it had a serious meltdown. It's completely wiped and all I have is IE7

What free anti virus, firewalls etc etc. should I install?

Any advice appreciated

This will start a massive debate, but I would recommend:-
    Anti-virus - Avira
    Firewall - PCTools free firewall
    Malwarebuytes anti-malware
    Spybot Search&Destroy
    Superantispyware

The last three are for getting rid of nasties that creep onto your system.

  • I use AVG, Spybot and Ad-Aware. My router is my firewall.

What, you wait ages for one and then three turn up at once? :p

  • I'd suggest the following:

    Anti-virus - Avira AntiVir
    Anti-malware - Malwarebytes
    Anti-spyware - SUPERAntiSpyware

The anti-virus runs all the time and the anti-spyware and anti-malware are on demand i.e. you manually start a scan.

Ensure the PC is patched properly by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Finally ensure you've got a firewall, XP / Vista's are fine.

Zonealarm firewall, the company changed hands and now belongs to an Iranian company, but I still swear by it.
Hell it's what Symantec based their firewall on, except Zonealarm is free.

A link to that fascinating info would be of interest.
