Contrary to popular opinion I vote Norton - wait for it...

Actually Norton 2009 is a really good product, it installs quickly, updates are fast, it actually uninstalls when you ask it to and the amount of RAM it uses is tiny

and this from someone who has NEVER recommended a Norton product for Windows (Norton DOS products were ace!! <sigh those were the days!!>)

Avast, out of those 2 you mentioned. personally would say Kaspersky or Nod32 would be better.
I have tried Kaspersky, currently using Nod32, tried avast, antivir, avg, bitdefender, and others in the past.
for most of my computer years, i used kaspersky.

Here's an intresting video on Avast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iquamx6LY0w&feature=channel

AVG is better than Avast. And Avira is better than them both in terms of protection. :)

If im honest, I wouldn't get either of them.

Really depends what floats your boat to be honest.

Norton internet security 2009 is actually faster and does do its job. It does occasionally miss a couple of trojans.

Avast is not the best either. You can use the freeware and don't pay anything.

Kaspersky 2009 is poor. Slows my computer right down and had to uninstall it.

    Now.....................

    Argos is expensive.

If you bank with HSBC you can get McAfee for free (12 months). Not brilliant but does its job.

If you bank with Barclays you can get Kaspersky free (12 months).

I believe each bank now gives away some free antivirus software.

Are they good? Everyone has a different opinion.

I agree - been running Avira for six months now, so far (touch wood!!!) clean as a whistle, updates every day easily, runs quietly in the background. And... FREE!!

"The best anti-virus is common sense"

Lose Internet Explorer, get Firefox, don't use facebook apps, verify any links (ask the sender if they really sent it) sent via MSN messenger, learn to recognise fake virus scan popups and send every downloaded file to "virustotal.com" before opening it.
Enjoy a fast PC, free from AV bloatware.

I haven't used AV since 2001 and have never had a virus infection on my main PC, my laptop was however knowingly "sacrificed" a number of times in the interest of repairing infected PC's.

Though I could never recommend running without AV if you have kids using your PC or you've been known to fall victim to online scams or virus's in the past.

If your computer is slowing down when you install Antivirus then your infected with Malware.

I would suggest wiping your hard drive, then re-installing windows after backing up all your data. Then installing Kaspersky 2009 on a fresh install of Windows.

    Prevention is the Key.

Avira for me. Used to use AVG pre version 7 which used to be great. Found Avast annoying far too annoying and slow. Not used the latest version of Norton so can't comment on that.

I suggest you refer to this thread before making your decision.
In the wise words of Luis Villazon of PC Format fame:

Imagine if there was a billion dollar industry dedicated to selling you hyenas to control the badgers in your garden. Imagine that, even though there are no badgers in your garden and never have been, these companies told you that you needed to have a snarling, vicious hyena patrolling your lawn in case one should ever appear. And not just one hyena either, imagine they told you to add another hyena every month to provide adequate protection. And imagine that the hyenas were bad-tempered, smelly, dug holes in the lawn and chewed on your leg whenever you stepped outside. Finally, imagine that your garden was surrounded by a high wall anyway and the only way for badgers to get in was for someone to post them to you in a conspicuous badger-shaped parcel that you could simply refuse to accept when the postman delivered it.
