    Sound to me like the SSID has been changed to something you don't recognize... Go into the router setup and change the SSID to WLAN-D529F (just something inconspicuous and different from everyone else)

    the model is WGR614 v9. according to the router set up page SSID is enabled (in advanced settings).

    ...wee update

    i managed to get logged on to the network somehow on the laptop but it displayed 'local access only' and i couldn't get online. then after some more checking it diagnosed the problem as my Virgin Broadband network being inaccessable because it may be hidden...??

    still stuck : (

    i've got to the stage with this where i can now see my wireless network on both the pc and laptop but when i try to connect it won't let me on either... really frustrated with this, i guess it's something simple i'm missing but just cannot work it out : (
