lost my wirless network

hey this my 1st post here, after getting some excellent advice reading the forum

problem i've got is that i've lost my wireless network at home. I've got an xp pc and vista on my laptop. I'm using a (vigin broadband) netgear router and up until the middle of the week the network has worked great but i have installed network magic to share files and 2 days later my wireless network has gone. i suspect it's maybe something to do with the firewall settings but not sure

when i do a search for wirless networks nothing shows on the pc but the laptop can still 'see' all my neighbour's networks

i've checked all the settings at the netgear set up page (198.162.1.1) but nothing seems to have changed... anyone got any ideas?

thanks in advance !

Sounds like a really good reason not to install network magic! Restore your machines to before it was installed, as no program is needed to share files across a home network. Check that your SSID is still being broadcast by logging into the router.

    thanks for the reply !

yeah looks like network magic might be to blame, although for a day or so everything was working really well and prior to installing i was having a nightmare sharing files between pc and laptop on the wireless network

already tried system restore a couple of times but each time it is failed leaving everything as is

    how do I do this?
  • You go into the wood and chop down some trees, then use the log to attack your router.

otherwise enter 198.162.1.1 into the IE window. Look for your SSID setting as see if these are hidden.

Why use network magic to do something that Windows does (imho) pretty damn well on it's own?

i was having a fair bit of trouble getting the vista laptop to see the xp files on the network - had them set to shared etc but couldn't get anything to work... network magic done the job but looks like it killed my wireless network in the process : (

Reset the router to system defaults which will "unhide" it (turn SSID off and clear the password).

You'll need to google the make and model to find out how to do that. There will be a switch on it somewhere.

Use Device Manager to delete your Network adaptors. Make sure your router is ON and reboot. System will pick up the drivers and load it again.

Now use a wired connection to the router to set a password. Logon wirelessly and turn SSID off.
