many thanks John - will give this a try... there is a resent button (pin hole sized) on the router at the back
is deleting the network adaptors safe...? the computer will find them again upon rebooting??0 -
Reset the router to system defaults which will "unhide" it (turn SSID off and clear the password).
You'll need to google the make and model to find out how to do that. There will be a switch on it somewhere.
Use Device Manager to delete your Network adaptors. Make sure your router is ON and reboot. System will pick up the drivers and load it again.
Now use a wired connection to the router to set a password. Logon wirelessly and turn SSID off.
There is absolutely no need to rest the router!
If the router is reset to factory defaults, it will need to be configured again from scratch. The OP simply needs to read the user manual and learn how to configure the router. It's very easy to look and see if the SSID is being broadcast and there is no point turning off SSID broadcast anyway.
You also made no mention of setting up the WPA wireless encryption which would also need to be set up again after a factory reset.

On your xp machine right click on 'My computer' choose 'Manage'. You will get a window appearing entitles Computer Management. Expand Services and Applications and choose services. If you scroll towards the bottom of the services, there will be ione called Wireless Zero Configuration. If this does not have a status of 'STARTED', right click on it and choose start.
Then perform a wireless search for your network again. If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button:beer:0
