Thanks tried that http address and it gives me same page not displayed message. My wired network was set up using the cd provided by my ISP but the weird numbers may be explained by the fact that I am in Switzerland !

The netgear router was bought from UK but the same model is sold here also.

Have you tried hard resetting the router, holding the button down on the back for 30 seconds, this should reset it back to factory state, so you will need to make a note of all your settings first.(passwords etc..)

    then try 192.168.0.1

the router should give you a local 192.168 address, not 80.*

    Before you do that..

Is your phone line cable (cablecom), and your router is a dg834GT? (ADSL not cable). Is the connection going into it a phone line, or connected into one of the 4 lan ports at the back?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

My connection is cablecom (no phone connected) and yes the router is dg834GT ADSL and the connection going into a lan port at the back - is that wrong ?

Well you are using an ADSL router designed for ADSL, on a cable connection, which explains the IP addresses..

You could have just used a cable/dsl router instead, they are about £20 cheaper.

I think you may be able to get around the problem by telling IE that 192.* is a local network, IE, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, tick bypass proxy server for local addresses. if that doesn't work, try putting 192.* in the advanced/exceptions box on the same screen.

if that doesn't work, post all the info in those screens.

Hi Albertross, I have tried tick bypass proxy server for local addresses. This didnt work I then tried adding 192.* to the exceptions box but it doesnt seem to store this as it gives a pop-up box saying that "the settings for the proxy server are blank. Do I want to turn off the proxy connection ?" - whether I select yes or no doesnt seem to make a difference.

When you say post all info in those screens if you mean the LAN settings there wasnt any info before - ie no boxes ticked etc.

I was half expecting you to post back saying that you had an Apple Mac, after the Switzerland, and Cable surprises ! hehe..

I'm beginning to run out of ideas..

Could you try disconnecting the cable from the router to the cable phone point, and then do a
    start, run, cmd

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

To try and pick up a 192 address from the router.

    ipconfig /all - if you have a 192 address, try http://192.168.0.1

to reverse this, and get back onto the internet, you'll have to plug the cable back in and do another release and renew.

Have you done any web based config on this router before?

  • Hi,

I my have the wrong end of the stick here, so if I have then please ignore me! But you can work wired, but not wireless. The details from ipconfig display that the wireless is not in use. You cannot have both working at the same time. Perhaps you could disable wired, 'repair' wireless, and then post the ipconfig details again. But it does look to me as if there is a problem with DHCP.

    Hope that helps

Hi all, ok an update to my post. I unplugged the modem and router and connected again - now I was able to get on to my router 192 address and followed albertrosses instructions to the link he posted first and it all set up (or appeared to) fine. Now when I view available wireless networks it still shows NETGEAR but not as secured do I need to plug in my wireless and do an iprelease and renew ?

Thanks for all help so far

Did you mean that you have followed these? you need to do it wired..

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=1460703&postcount=2

If you've followed them exactly, it shouldn't be called netgear, so maybe nothing got changed.."Enter a unique SSID (that doesn't identify you..)"

Whenever you change a setting in the router config, don't forget to click apply, otherwise it will forget what you have changed when you change screens.

Before you start, buried away in the router config somewhere (basic settings screen), there are settings to use NAT, I suspect that this is turned off, and you are using this as a basic router. It might be an idea to turn it on, so that your PC's get allocated a 192.* address, it should make life easier, and make your system more secure.

Also, under lan ip setup, there is a "use router as a dhcp server" settting, tick it if unticked.. The starting address should be 192.168.0.2
