Wireless Connects but no internet ?

Hi all, could someone help with my wireless problem. I have a Netgear DG834GT and have set it up today. As my laptop is wireless enabled when I check available netwroks the netgear shows fine and I can connect to it but when I then try to go on the net it says page not found for whatever site I go on. Please can someone help

I did have it working but then in my wisdom thought I had better try and secure the connection - me 'trying' to do this has obviously messed up another setting. Any suggestions ?

Hi, yes it works when wired - I've had to do that while I try to get an answer to the problem. Tried to ping but says request timed out (this was using the run prompt under start - was this correct ?)

Am I better undoing all I've done and following the instructions on your other post albertross? Daft question but what would be the best way to undo what I've done

    Thanks for your help

Try turning off any encryption on both the router and the wireless PC and see if it works again.

If so, then you can try again to set encryption keys on the router and laptop. Make sure that the settings and keys are identical.

As already mentioned, mismatched keys will stop it working, right clicking on the wireless icon, and doing a repair may help.

ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew may help

    HI CrazyM,

Since this is the first time you have setup -- you are having the same probs as everyone -- for the first time.

In Control Panel, network connections, double click the wirelss -- the support -- if it says nothing in the default gateway-- then it is not connected.

Right click the wireless connection -- diable -- the a few seconds later -- right click -- enable, then view wireless connections -- and then try connecting again.

Before you try any of this-- disable the WEP or any other security -- as you ask it to connect -- it will say that the network is not secure --ask it to connect anyway.

Then look at the gateway again -- if you have numbers -- then u should be OK.

    Let us know

I have a netgear(MR314) and am experiencing similar problems with my Dell laptop bought recently. It is not exactly the same as I do have Internet access but I lose it intermittantly and only a reboot of the router will bring the connection back. This can happen while the signal is excellent but again I even lose the wireless signal intermittantly. My network also has two desktops connected. one by cable and the other via a usb wireless adapter. The cabled PC very rarely loses connection but the other wireless one disconnects intermittantly(although not as often as my laptop does).
I did a google and found so many complaints about netgear routers and this possible fault that I've concluded that there must be a large number of dodgy netgear routers out there which Netgear are refusing to acknowledge. I'm sure that routers from the likes of linksys, belkin etc also have a number of failing ones but there are so many more reports about netgear that I'm going to dump them and buy another brand to see if I can finally get a reliable wireless connection. The fact that you have never connected could mean you have a different problem but maybe you should check out netgear's user forum

Google for any piece of equipment, and you will find problems, and few happy customers - people generally post problems, not praise.

Until the last few days, this forum rarely had a Netgear problem, but plenty of Belkin, Linksys etc..

Wireless is complicated. It can be affected by interference from the neighbours equipment (change channels), video senders, dect phones, they all use the same 2.4Ghz frequency. You will probably have a wireless black spot or two in the house. The same issues affect all brands.

Sometimes swapping the wireless card/usb dongle fixes issues.

AOL and VPN users need to reduce their MTU from the router default.

This can tweak it on the PC .. try 1400 or 1460 for AOL.

If you haven't done this already, try changing channels, at least 5 channels away from the nearest neighbours (use netstumbler to find out what they are using).

Upgrade the router to the latest firmware.

Is that model a 802.11b router? If so, tell your laptop to use this mode, not the faster g

Some routers prefer WPA to WEP, I'm not sure if this affects Netgears, but something to try if you are using WEP (which is less secure than WPA anyway).

If you haven't setup encryption, disabled SSID broadcasting, changed the default password, disabled upnp, and remote admin, then I'd do that, people could be connecting to your router, and playing..

There may be a bad batch of routers out there, but I'd check these things before you waste money on new equipment. Never had a problem myself.
