Just to add to all that has been mentioned. The first thing to do is to take the City Sightseeing open top tour bus, that'll get you around most of the major attractions so you can see what you want to spend your time looking at later.

I live near Sledmere. If you want to see things outside of York, then can I suggest, Sewerby Hall in Bridlington, a really lovely place to have a picnic, and the south beach is lovely for a kick about with a football. (I wouldn't neccessarily visit bridlington for a day out, its really run down and I only go there for Marks and Spencers, but Sewerby Hall is a real favourite with my children who are aged 8 and 10).

Off to get a few links for ideas on other places of interest to visit.

http://www.ntopsearch.com/VisitEngland/en-GB/Details.aspx?contentID=125850 You are 99% guarantee to catch a fish here, my children love this and Pickering is a lovely rural village, it has a steam train too, an excellent day out, Highly recommended.

http://www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest Excellent again for children, and they have a Go Ape activity centre on site too, my children enjoy this very much.

http://home.freeuk.net/jiy/stockton.htm This is a pub just outside of york with a playbarn suitable for an 8 year old, ideal if it's raining, the food is good and my children love it in the playbarn.

    The last link I promise:

  • Just got back from a fantastic few days in York made so much easier by all you lovely posters! Managed to take in the Castle Museum, Jorvik, Dungeons, the Minster, Eden Camp and the Boat Trip as well as taking in a few great eating places along the way (gosh there are a lot of great cake shops there - quite glad in a way that I don't live near unable as I am to resist temptation). Am a little footsore but totally worth it! Thanks again to all who helped... If you haven't been, I'd definitely recommend it.
