i suppose you have thought about the minster? you have to pay to get in now unless its for a service but i really like it.

the york voluntary guides do free walks http://www.btinternet.com/~york.touristguides/

or you can pay, york walks do lots of themed walks http://www.yorkwalk.netfirms.com/

hope this is some help

york is very small, car parking can be difficult and expensive but tbh you wont need the car - all the things ive said are within easy walking distance of the centre - just checked and are you at fairfield manor? if so i recommend you get the park and ride into town http://www.york.gov.uk/parking/ride/5Rawcliffe_Bar1/ will be the nearest to you

I'm from York too and just to add to the brilliant suggestions, here are my faves (based on what keeps my 9 year old happy)

Museum Gardens for picnics - kids are alowed to climb on the ruins and they never tire of it. There used to be peaocks but I havent seen them for a while.

Go see !!!!!! Turpins grave (come off the walls at Walmgate Bar and its very close)

The boat trips are nice and not too expensive either.

Rowntrees park is great for kids too, and all free and easy to walk to from the city centre

Get on the train to the seaside at Scarborough (50 mins)

York is my favourite place and I hope you have a good time
Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!

If you are planning to do a lot of the attractions in York, then a York Pass would probably work out cheaper.

I second that! the guy next to the art gallery (city square) is the best one in my opinion (and ive been on hundreds of ghost walks- uk and internationally). He's not gimmicky at all.

I found out the other day that there is a nuclear bunker from the cold war era you can go visit. Looks great! great history. Gonna try and book to go in next few weeks. Any reviews of that?

Right - i've packed the kids off to school/college so I can give this some thought!

The castle museum is excellent - it's got all sorts of things in it and you can wonder round at your leisure - would definitely put it on your list.

Same for National Railway museum - they often have steam trains running in the summer holidays - sort of place, like Castle Museum, where you could spend hour upon hour...

Jorvik is good...but can be pricey. If you want to do Jorvik get there early as you can spend longer queuing to get in than you do going round in your travel car! Queues are long in the summer hols!

minster is glorious - they do charge - but it is a beautiful bulding (and beautifully cool in summer!). Look out for the rebuilt bit where the ceiling bosses were designed by Blue Peter viewers.

Walking round the bar walls is free - and you get to see a lot of york from a completely different angle. my favourite bit is round the back of the Minster.

I would agree on a ghost walk.....and if you're feet are tired what about a boat trip on the River Ouse?

Agree with thye poster who said about city centre parking being an expensive nightmare! We don't have a car but you can get round fine on bus/foot. Comfortable footware is advised though....

Ramada - if you're in the shipton Road one then the Park and Ride will be fine (no2 green line) if you're in the Micklegate one then you're right in the centre anyway.

If you want to go shopping then there's Monks Cross (accessible by No9 P&R bus) - there is also a Water World here - York is not great for swimming pools. There is also a McArthur Glen shopping outlet (no7 P&R bus) - which is good for bargains!

Eating out - well take your pick! The city has many chains...but my favourite eateries are Lendal Cellars - good food and it's very quirky - most of it is underground and Oscars - local wine bar/eatery - laid back and good food. My favourite Italian is Toto's near the Barbicsn - great Italian food and pretty cheap too.

Don't know too much about Indian restaurants but have been to the Viceroy of India (Monkgate) and it was brilliant.

Shout if you want any more advice!
:jFlylady and proud of it:j

I wouldn't take my eight year old (very sensitive soul) to the Dungeon but if yours is up for a scare or two, go for it! We loved the Castle Museum, Railway Museum, ramble round the Shambles and a service at the Minster if possible. I know they are expensive but the Sightseeing Bus was a great way to see the City as well and kids just love it as well.

Have a wonderful time.

In regards with Parking in York, yes it is quite expensive but if your are prepared to be a little outside the city centre, then I find either the Foss Bank (Sainsbury's) car park quite reasonable at 70p per hour or Kent Street (Barbican Centre) £2.40 for 2 hours, £4 for 4 hours or £6.50 for 24 hours.

Both these car parks are just outside of the city walls but are still quite close to the attractions (5-10 minute walk) and offer a good starting point for walking the city walls.
