yes you can use your own email account

now this is what to do if its got an orange sim in it, i suppose it will be the same

    click menu
    click messaging
    click email(number 3)
    click settings(number 6)
    click email account (number 3)
    click account setting(number 2)
click account 2 (number 2) number 1 is probably set to default orange email - ignore this.
on the following screen type in your email settings, if you dont know them you will be able to get them from your ISP

Leave the Pop Port and Smtp port as they are and then save.
your email account will now be set up

You now have to make this your primary account

    click menu
    click messaging
    click email(number 3)
    click settings(number 6)
    click current account (number 1)
    highlight your new account

this is your email account set up.

now if your using a o2 sim in a previously orange locked phone you will probably need to alter the GPRS settings to o2

unfortunately i dont know how to do this bit but i believe o2 can send you a text that automatically adjusts these settings.

    hope this helps

    firstly go to http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/ota2/input2/0,,181,00.html

and fill out the form on there, you will recieve a text that will update your GPRS settings to 02 active.

be back in a mo when i find out the email settings

    found the following on http://forum2.mobile-review.com//archive/index.php/t-35499.html

    1. Go to Menu / Messages / Email / Settings / Email Profile / Profile Settings

    2. Select your first blank profile and enter these settings (for prepay)
    Profile Name: O2
    APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
    Login Id: payandgo
    Password: password
    DNS1: 193.113.200.195
    DNS2: 0.0.0.0

    Save that profile

    3. Click Back and CURRENT PROFILE - select your new one

if you do this it should all work, fingers crossed,

let me know if it works!

if you mean the box that says "email account" it is just any name that you want, i would just use your isp's/email providers name i.e supanet or blueyonder.

if you mean the whole section of email account, you will need to fill in the details of the account you want the emails to be retrieved from.

    i.e your username and password

    then
    smtp.supanet.com
pop.supanet.com (i have used supanet as an example as this is the isp/email provider i use)

etc etc. You will be able to get all of this information from your current email settings(if you use outlook express) or from the email provider if it is a web based service.

@ivrywtr, i'm not too sure on the d600, however i would be surprised if there is any difference. you will only have to do the first bit though

if you bought it as an orange phone and are stilll using it with an orange sim. Barjam's is only more complicated because the GPRS/Email settings will be geared up to connect to orange, however he/she is now using an o2 sim so the orange servers will not except it.

You can't setup hotmail because it doesn't support pop3. However, if you have gmail then you can follow their instructions at https://www.gmail.com to setup your account.
I've setup my Orange D600e (unlocked) to access virgin's server to download and send emails. It's a nice way to consume some of the free £5 sims I got from Virgin. FYI - a small email cost only 3p to send/receive, cheaper than a SMS!
