sounds like you were lucky doomy to be able to just stop like that. I think it depends on how deep the issues go for different addictions and triggers My mum said she stopped smoking in about 1972 - just like that - but has struggled all her life with food. I can take or leave alcohol but food is my ultimate bete noir. I know my triggers inside out and the reason I started to eat (I was very skinny until I was 13) but it runs very deep and it is more than just avoiding them.
I guess it is why the diet industry is so successful - if it were just a case of turning things on and off in your head, we'd all be a size 12 - but sadly, it's not the case and even those who lose lots of weight say when they talk about it that they now have to watch what they eat all the time. I guess it's like over-spending - the number of people who are really good for ages and then just have a splurge, feel guilty and end up back at square 1.

You also have to remember that some people just have more addictive personalities than others and that will make it harder to quit anything. And, I know it's been said many times but giving up addictive behaviours around food is 1000 times harder than giving up drink or fags. You can avoid just about every other addictive substance but you need food to survive. How many more drug addicts would there be if you needed a line of cocaine 3 times a day?:A

this is it Toto. Food is necessary - alcohol, fags, gambling and drugs aren't.
Smoking has never interested me - but my OH is what I would call a 'dedicated' smoker  Whenever he is giving me one of his 'well, just do it' lectures about losing weight, I say 'well give up smoking to show your support' and he says 'I don't want to give up smoking, I enjoy it. Admit to me you don't want to give up food and well, that's fine.' I know deep, deep down he doesn't want to smoke as occasionally he will say 'I should cut back on smoking' but will never admit it if challenged.
No, I don't want to give up food. I want to give up the stuff in my head that makes me eat food
I also think that depression plays a big part in the life of lots of people who struggle with something like food, spending, gambling.

BB, as part of my course we had a sat morning workshop withy Julia Buckroyd, who is one of the foremost lectures on eating disorders or dis ordered eating as she called it.
she;s written some good books - http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=julia+buckroyd&x=14&y=17Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!

cheers scaredy - I'll have a look at those

I always think - I'm intelligent with qualifications coming out of my ears. I'm sensible and life 'savvy' and know the differences between what I should be eating and shouldn't - I teach it for goodness sakes. So why do I have such a bad relationship with it??
but then, I guess that's the same as anyone who has an addiction really.

oooooooh, I know the exact reason I started eating.
I might treat myself to a couple of books and have a read. It would be a bit of a treat to spend the money but it may be well worth it.

food is just soo much easier to get hold of these days. In the workshop she told us the % of income which had to be used to get food:
1900 - 50% income spent on food
1950 - 30%
1980 - 20%
2009 - 8%
food is much cheaper and more readily available, esp with 24hrs opening.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!

it is so much cheaper now scaredy. I remember at university in the late 80s/early 90s there was no such thing as the Basics/smartprice range available today and I remember food being quite dear in comparison to now. What little there was available in the Basics range (I remember it was plain white packaging with black lettering) was nasty and really poor quality and there wasn't the overwhelming choice available now for foods generally.
