I'm already registered as self employed and have already filed my 2008/09 tax return (I think that's why they are listing my new job as secondary employment).
At the time I completed the self assessment form, my only income was from MSing. This tax year, I have continued to do some MSing (though not as much as now I keep missing all the jobs ) but I started this new job a few weeks ago, so this tax year, not last.
Yes, I did hand my new employer a P45. I've been out of work for a few years but did one week of work last summer so had the P45 from that job, and I handed that in to my new employer. That's why I was surprised to be on the emergency tax code now.
I do already have a blank P46, which my new employer sent me, but I haven't completed it since I gave them my P45 instead. The Tax office said I didn't need to complete the P46, just ring them back next week.
The other thing that confused me was that the Tax office bloke said I should tell them this job is my only employment since April. As if he expected me to stop being self employed - and to have used a time machine to go back and stop being self employed before I started the new job.
When I fill out my next self assessment form, do I still need to list income from the job, even though that will have been taxed through PAYE? Also, what are the downsides, am I going to find MSing is not worth it if I suddenly have to pay tax on this (generally less than minimum wage) occupation??
You do need to list your income from your main employment on your tax return, but you will also list that you've paid x in tax in relation to this employment so no more tax should be due.
This will be your only employment since April, by claiming such your Tax free allowances will be allocated against your PAYE job, and then when you declare your mystery shopping self employment for 09/10 it will all be fully taxable - no issue.
In terms of whether you'll find mystery shopping not to be worth it, that will be a question only you can answer, it may be you just adjust the jobs you take, possibly avoiding going out of your way for jobs, but that's personal choice.
Also..... the fact that your new employer has given you a P46 would suggest that they've either lost your P45 or are not able to use it for some other reason, I would fill in and return.0 -

OK got one music shop but when I tried to apply for another one in a different city it was saying it had been taken. The one I have is still showing up too - is this just another RE glitch?0

Phew, just booked my first RE job...took a while and several ERROR pages!!
Just got a quick question...
When it says Fee: £*** and Reimbursment: £*** does that mean that I can buy something up to the value they say AND then get the fee on top of that?

They sent me the P46 ages ago, along with my contract and a load of other paperwork - at that point they didn't know I had a P45. I thought the P45 would be better so I used that instead - also the Tax man this morning told me it wouldn't make any difference and I shouldn't bother doing the P46. I'm really confused now.
Thanks for the help though, I think it's starting to make sense.0 -

Hi,
Yes, the fee is seperate from the reimbursement - lets say that the reimbursement is £X so you have up to that amount to spend and Y which is your actual fee for the job.0 -

Yes, you'll get the fee and the reimbursement upto that amount, i.e if the reimbursement is £10 but you only spend £8.50, you'll get £8.50, if you spend £12.50 you'll only get £10.0 -
Hi
I have a question about the speadsheet I was kindly sent :j
If I paid £4.93 for an item as reimbursement and got paid £5 fee
Do I put the 4.93 in the item bought column
And the £5 fee in the paid box ?
Or
Do I have to write a description of the item ie.. shower gel
And put the £9.93 in the paid box ?
Sorry to be dim blush blush blush"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."
