Regardless of my comments on Torremolinos (had my mobile nicked there which may explain something of my feelings), I have stopped at Sol and Melia hotels (they are different brands of the same chain - http://www.solmelia.com/home.htm) throughout Spain, and never had a bad experience.
  • Shimsham,

Torremolinos is a strange place- it can be excellent in one area and poor in another. The seafront is flat and some great hotels are here. However to get to the centre, as said, is high up and would be a disaster for you. 1618's comments are excellent as this area is around Benalmadena port which is lovely and the walk around this area is flat and fantastic.

Fuengirola has 7 kilometres of flat beach and the town is flat, giving you more scope to explore. Hotel wise to compare look at the Florida Spa ( TUI owned I think), or their sister hotels the Yaramar and the Angela. Other hotels on the seafront are the Confortel, Las Palmeras( not a good choice if you don't want noise!) and the Las Piramides. A lovely hotel just tucked away is the Las Rampas which has a lift at the entrance to the hotel lobby- very Andalucian inside though!

I have stayed in the Don Pedro, Marco and Pablo and they are lovely hotels in a great location just across the road from the beach in a very flat area. All serve the same excellent food. A little tip join the MAS club and you can get a free late check out until 4pm if you show your card, I've saved a fortune with that. Theres a lift up to the main shopping area about 10 mins walk from the hotel. I find Torremolinos much less British than other areas such as Benalmadena, seams to have a much more international feel. There are some lovely fish restaurants along the front and the beach is clean although the sand is quite dark.

    Hi,

My partners daughter is in a wheelchair and we have stayed in the Sol Don Pedro / Pablo / Marco complex - about 3 years ago.

The indoor pool is particularly good with a ramped entrance to the water.

Whilst the hotel is fine to get around in and generaly disabled friendly however you will find some parts locally are not.

We generally have used Sol hotels as we find they offer good value and a reasonable sized room and are generally well catered for in terms of disabled facilities.

If you want to go into the town you have you walk up quite a steep hill.

People mention the lift to the town - just one problem, they forget the flight of stairs to it - As my partners daughter can just about stand this was a lifting exercise for me to carry her.

You will also find many bars in this area do not have disabled toilets.

We have also stayed in the Sol Aloha Peurto and the Pez Espada further up the resort, but you cannot wak across to them from the beach front.

We have also visited the Rui Nautilas (next door to Sol Aloha) - Which has a hoist to get you in and out of the pool and generally looks good for disabled access.

For the Sol Aloha, this was good for disabled access (but no pool hoist) and the close local area offered bars / cafes that did have disabled toilets.

So the Sol Aloha & Rui Nautilas would be recommened - this area is La Carihula and the beach front here is totally flat and goes around to the marina and to the bottom of Benalmedena.

We would most defitely not recommend the Pez Espeda - the rooms are not disable dfriendly, and going to the toilet reminded my partners daughter of the tin opener comment when you have left no space for someone to access their car.

I have photos if you would like - Thomson said this was disabled friendly - Which was why we were not able to easily get access to the pool and it was all stepped and had to walk around the hotel grounds to access the pool.

I hope this helps and as mentioned below getting an MAS card helps at the Sol hotels.

If you like more help please get in touch.

Arbarkie.Thank you very much for that its most useful first of all whats MAS card and yes i would grateful for some photos if you have them.My wife is not totally disabled she is riddled with arthritis in her back/legs/hands she can walk 50 yards then shes had enough so thats why we have to have a wheelchair for her to get about. As far as the pool is concerned that woul not appeal to her as she as a phobia about water, the biggest problem she has is when it comes to steps.
We have been to fuengorola a few times and stayed at the yaramar[was not to impressed with that for what you have to pay ] and is nice and flat so wethought we might have a change this time and go to torremolinos where my likes the shops there.
    Cheers

    whats MAS card

    Hi,

Basically, its a Sol loyalty card.

You get points for the amount you have spent and you can turn this into free nights.

Also, you can a free paper and late check out until 4pm for no charge.

    Sol Aloha

    http://www.solmelia.com/hotels/spain/torremolinos/sol-aloha-puerto/home.htm

The rooms here are a split between bedroom and sitting room, the access to the bathroom needs a little thought but it is not difficult - Unlike the Pez Espada.

    Hope this helps.

Since where you are going is Chav central, if you want to avoid the masses you seriously need to be careful.

I would look here and find out where all the little scroats won't be.

Torremolinos is lovely. Much quieter than Benalmadena, which has the "sol y mar " the 24 hour square which is full of brits drunk every night partying.( nothing wrong with that if its your thing ).....Its like everywhere, there are nice parts and not so nice parts.......
Sturll seems to take great pleasure in rubbing people up the wrong way.....
