You don't need to install a firewall, it's got one preinstalled called "UFW".

I take it you're on a Windows PC (Windows program don't work on linux).

As for downloading programs (or packages as they are konwn) they are kept on sites called "Repositories" or Repo's and in Ubuntu are accesses via the System menu look for an item called "synaptic package manager"

You then type in what you are looking for then install it from there.

I use windows 7 also download free from microsoft runs better than Vista depends on how old your system is

Not only that, but if it did work now, it would cease to do so next year, so it's just postponing the problem and not solving it.

Almost every distribution is released on live CD these days. Knoppix was merely one of the first.
