As some of you may know, i'm a minimilist and have a perfect (for me) capsule wardrobe, BUT i have absolutly tons of make-up. I'm dead confused about how long to keep it
, trouble is some of it is premium brand stuff, only used once or twice.
Come on girls help me sort it out and tell me what and how long to keep stuff and how your make up is stored/kept/ and what you use, alternativly is yours the same as mine;) and need clearing out too????
I recently had a nasty eye infection, convinced it was from eye make-up, but has never happened to me in 17 years of wearing make up everyday.
Your thoughts please...................

TBH, my make-up is quite pared down now. As I've got older, I've found that the less I look as though I'm wearing the better. HOWEVER, this does not mean I am wearing less make up IYSWIM!!!!!......just a bit more selective with colours etc. I've really gone for a smaller quantities of make-up products that I really like and stick with them. I do swap round mascara brands but it's one in one out.
I've chucked everything into a box at the moment, ready to go through again...but won't be too difficult a task for me.
I wear make-up every day Clinique foundation, Mac cream blush, Rimmel eyeliner pencil, Maybelline mascara atm and Boots No7 or Rimmel lip gloss / nude lipstick. Eyeshadows tend to be nude / taupe shades ......got some nice Mac ones and a nice Mac highlighter. So it's quite a capsule collection I 've got. Ha Ha Sharron...one up there!!:rotfl:
I understand your concern re your eye infection, but I would never discard make up on the basis of how long I'd had it , unless it was dried up/ grotty looking. I do use up mascaras though, but probably not in the 3 months they recommend. That's just me ....I know it's wrong and I know people are going to tell me about the bugs growing in there!, but hey ho!
My big bug bear are those big palettes of make-up which I scarcely use. I have 2, both pressies and have been dipped into (so can't sell), but waste of space really! Bit stuck to know what to do there. Any ideas?0 -
OK. I know I'll get told off for this, but I have a tub of eyeshadow that my mother had.....in th 1970s I think. Its brilliant and if I could replace it with something the same but new I would. The container shattered a few years ago so my sister and I divided it up into new containers, and now both have some! And we both wear it occasionally
: it never runs out. Its a dry shadow: I'd be wary of something that old that had liquid/moisture in it.
I have some of my own teenage purchases and I'm 30 now. I do NOT keep very old mascaras or liqid eyeliner or foundation (although I've only once finishd a tube of mascara and occasionally I get rid of foundation with some left as its old).
I had an eye infection from a splinter fairly recently so I chucked out all my mascaras then and replaced the eye pencil and liner I had been wearing before I realised it was infected.0 -
Oooh I really should do this. I have about 4 wicker baskets full of make up  That's shocking isn't it...ranging from random stuff I've had since my teens to new buys that I don't really use! & I'm with you on the make up pallettes, I've got a couple from 'Too Faced', gifts that I dont' really like, but too good to throw out?!
In my make up bag I've got:
Benefit Bad Gal Mascara
No 7 Sensitive Eyes Mascara (had real trouble lately with some medication I take making my eyes super sensitive - they started to puff and swell to the point I couldn't see, so rather than going without mascara, I got this stuff - too vain for my own good :rotfl:)
No 7 bronzer pallette
No 7 bronzing pearls (not sure why I have both in there?!)
Concealer
Jemma Kidd blusher
Liquid eyeliner
At home I know I have...- 2 x 'Too Faced' eyeshadow/lipgloss mix pallettes, think one is used, the other is still in packaging from Xmas
- At least 4/5 eye liners, ranging from pencils to liquids in silver blue (looks awful on me - not sure why I bought!)
- At least 3/4 mascaras - prob none less than a couple of months old
I really want the new one too with the funny looking brush head, like a little globe shape? But must get rid before buying new... - Concealer - have a burts & bee's one in a little tin & a couple of wands, again, no idea why I have so many??
- Foundation - one by Benefit & one by Rimmel, I don't wear Foundation...ever, again, no idea why I have them??
- Tinted moisturiser - I know I have the Benefit one which I use every so often, think one tube has lasted about 3 years so far  I also have a no7 one which is a dodgy colour on me & I'm quite sure i have a different one in a white tube but I can't remember who it's by...
- Eyeshadows, i have a whole wicker basket of them, and I never ever wear any of them - ranging from goth black to electro pink

- Bronzers - I have a few, tried loads to try and get the right tone as I'm quite olive skinned
- Blushers - I have a few no7 ones knocking around, and a really tragic golden coloured one - looks horrendous on!
Any thoughts on what would be a good make up capsule? I reckon:
2 x Mascara - for me anyway, in case I get a sensitive eye outbreak!
2 x eyeliners, 1 dry and 1 liquid
Bronzer x 1
Blusher x 1
Tinted moisturiser x 1
Concealear x 1
Eyeshadow - maybe 1 pallette of good colours?
xxBaby Boy arrived March 25th 2010 - 17 days late & 8lb 10oz :j0 -

Sounds like a good capsule to me!
I don't have quite as much, and having a couple of teenage neices helps as when i do have a sort out of make-up, body stuff & hair stuff they always get the benefit!
However, I know I need to have another sort out...... my mistakes tend to be eyeshadow / eyeliner colours....I need to sit down with a mirror in front of the window & try all the eyeshadows on & work out which ones are good colours & which aren't.....then do the same with the eyeliners & mascaras I have. I guess that leaving each one on for 30 minutes will also sort out which one / several / all / none makes my eyes itch! Must also remember to try this when I have not taken an antihistamine beforehand!
I also have some expensive stuff, mainly Estee Lauder, which I don't really want to chuck out unless I really have to......it's a pity nobody can collect & recycle it, sterilise it all & resell or make new with it, it would suit our MSE way of living!0 -
i have gone through all my makeup/.lotions /potions few years ago and luckily have managed to maintain it and resist into temptation of all these new products that keep coming out saying 'buy me' on the cover!
and boy does it feel good - less money wasted, less clutter and i get to enjoy a product fully before shopping around for a new item (so what if i have misses the lastest fad - so long as my makeup suits me and isn't 80's style still - though i think some ideas are coming back!)
anyway i have a makeup case with mainly my clinique makeup bonus time freebies - shadows that it. and good shadows of shade of each colour in the ROYGBIV range - shades that suit my skin tone - say an olive green rather than a lime green, dark pink rather than a pale pink etc. a few eyeliner colours like black, brown, navy, green, blue
i only use about 3 lipsticks at a time, a pink tone, beige/nude and a dark plum and so only 3 lipliners - if a lipstick runs out, i would try a gloss of that colour
only the one blusher, mascara, foundation, facepowder, concealer, as these need to be used up and not kept like i can keep eyeshadows.
my mascara (even the clinique bonus time small tube) last over 3 months nearly 6months. and i just use one at a time. i think manufacturers are always reinventing their mascaras, - worn with lash inserts and if we cannot finish our mascaras quick enough (ie throw them away quickly before it even finishes - totalled with fear of getting infections) then none of them would be sold so quickly and left on the shelves longer.
i think if you are hygienic enough and noone else uses the mascara then you would not need to replace it so often as the makeup companies would lilke us to. i just use between 2-3 mascaras a year.
anyway, any extra, new unopened stuff i keep in a bag, in a cool dark cupboard and it's something to look forward too.0 -

do you have a picture or description of the make, colour etc maybe we could look out to see if we know of anything similar- just a thought0 -

Ooh, good idea.
It was called Arabian Nights: I have no idea if that was the colour or the brand though
The container had a little extra compartment in the lid which had a very, very sparkly pale opalescent shadow which changed the colour if laid over the main colour, which was a bright, uncomprimising cerulean almost Majorelle blue, which was also a bit sparkly. Both powders were loose.
In fact, you've inspired me to have a google to see if I can find anything about it online.

I'm sure "Arabian Nights" is by Avon.0

I just checked avon's websit and they have a pencil clled Arabian glow, but sadly not at all like my ''ancient'' shadow. Thanks for the tip though. Google shows a few things called araboina nights but none so far are what I am trying to replace.0 -
I think the shade you're after is from early 1980's (when I was selling Avon during my A levels).0
