I've used easy2name for the past few years and have found the shoe label covers especially to be great. The name inside is still intact even when the shoes aren't!

As far as just putting the surname in clothes, I got the labels printed with surname; 1st child's name; 2nd child's name. I just then cut off /out the name that is not reqd. This does mean that the name of the 2nd child is in two pieces but never found that to be a problem. I just stick them on or iron on as reqd.

I always buy sew on name labels from 'able labels', you can buy online from them and they do all sorts of labels. You can sew the labels onto zippers, etc and I hate ironing, I'd rather sew them on even though its probably more work. There are lots of places that do name labels, Mothercare, Marks and Spencers, Able Labels. Google it, I'm sure there will be others out there, prices vary. I'd order now so you get them in plenty of time for school starting, this is probably their busiest time of year.

The name labels for shoes are great and last well. My kids wear plimsoles in class so shoes are put into a big tub with everyone else. If you imagine at the start of the year half the class all have the same shoes they can all get mixed up.

I used to use either iron on ones or taggits - like these http://shop.wovina.com/p-21-taggits.aspx but now usually just write their names in permanent marker on the labels with a pen like these http://www.ryman.co.uk/Write-4-all-Pen-Black-Single-0845256001.asp

I used woven name tapes and shoe labels from Able-labels. Just looking now and they do dishwasher-proof name labels too, ideal for lunch boxes, water bottles, sports equipment etc. I wish they had these when my kids were still at school as I found that even permanent marker wore off some things. http://www.able-labels.co.uk/products/Back-2-School.asp

I always had woven sew in name tapes in my uniform and my old gloves still have them in 20 years later! i am lazy so bought iron in labels or my oldest daughter and they were useless. I have since discovered stick in labels which are brilliant and even quicker than the iron in ones. have lasted well so far.

I've been using these for years too. They stick very well and even when clothing is washed and tumbled they don't fade. Would recommend

As someone who works in a school I am just really glad there are people out there who know how to put names in clothes! Thank you all.

By the way, I bought about 100 pre-printed labels when DD started school, but had hers and DS's initial plus surname printed (sew in ones) and folded the unnecessary initial under! They lasted until they finished in Secondary.
