The needs of a parent do not implicitly require the space to be close to the shop:
    • As a parent, you need a space big enough to fully open your doors without bashing the car next to you.
    • And you need a safe route to get to/from the shop.
    To address that:
    • The car parks should have big enough spaces for cars everywhere, rather than cramping all of the others together and having a bit extra for some.
    • And they should have adequate walkways.

Dare I ask about parents with 3 children...

Contraception....or leave them with hubby/wifey and shop without them.

...anyhoo, I am getting bored now as this was done to death a few weeks back.
  • As a parent, I certainly don't think I have a right to have a park closer to a supermarket then a disabled person. However I am very grateful for P&C parking spaces, it makes the dreaded shopping experience easier when I know that I'll be able to get the kids back in the car quickly & safely. P&C spaces are wide enough so that when you are getting your child in & out of your car you can park the trolley that they are sat in alongside the car rather then having to have it behind your car ready for some careless driver to reverse into.
I have a toddler & a 3 month old and find it infuriting when people without small children use the P&C spaces (with exception to those with disabled badges), especially in bad weather, they'd obviously rather a small baby get wet and blown about in the wind then risk their hair getting a bit frizzy! I've seen a gym bunny pull up in her fancy convertible into a P&C space, she'd obviously just come out of the gym but I guess her workout was sooooooo intense that she couldn't manage to walk the extra few yards if she parked in a normal space and so used a P&C space and possibly left a parent no choice but to park in a normal space and have a hell of a time squeezing his/her child out of its carseat.

Do parents have the right to park closer to the store? Maybe not. But for the safety and well being of small children what is the problem?? I find it appalling that anyone would have a problem with P&C parking spaces, and is actually a reflection on how selfish and inconsiderate some people in our society are.

Well said, couldn't agree more. I certainly don't need special treatment. I just want to get my baby in and out of the car safely. Howevert the point of the post is that Tesco do nothing about it and actually encourage you to use disabled spaces, and yes I agree disabled people need them more than parents so no I wouldn't use one in the same way that I always give up a seat on a train for someone who is elderly and encourage my children to do so. I think the difference is that I know the difference between right and wrong, something that is sadly lacking in today's society

As a mum of a 2yr old & a 4mth old, I'd be happy if the spaces were further away, but with a railed, covered walkway to the store - it's difficult enough looking out for the kids, let alone the idiots that speed through the car park, desperate to get to that close parking spot before the next person!

Before I realised where the spaces were at our local Sainsburys, we parked at the end of the car park, where we had enough space - it's not about the walking!

This subject always makes me laugh.

If it's so hard to shop with children due to parking issues why not shop online?

I have a problem in that I just cant see the need, I can see the want but not the need.

I also also agree that there are very many selfish and inconsiderate people around, but then maybe we are not coming from that from the same angle;).

Oh btw I am a driver, and have 4 children.
  • Odd, I don't have kids, yet I can fully see the need for P&C parking spaces.

I imagine it's a lot easier to get a child into a child's car seat (that you have to have) if you can fully open the doors. That's a lot easier when there are wide P&C spaces available and it helps prevent other cars from getting dents or scratches.

It may be easier, that still does not make them necessary, lots of adjustments would make life easier for any given section of society, but they are not made. It is not difficult to remove a child/seat fom a car, it just takes thought, and a bit of patience.
