Cars with a disabled tax disc

I'm sure you don't mean to, Zebra, but if I were the lady concerned (I'm in my 30s and have RA, so don't 'look disabled' at first glance) and I knew that you felt funny about using her badge, I'd be quite hurt, wondering if you were ashamed to be seen with me because I was disabled.
The reason I sometimes feel uneasy about using the badge is twofold.
As she isn't physically disabled, I feel those spaces nearer stores should be used by those people who have more difficulty geting into the shops.
For instance the other week, we parked outside a well-known catalogue shop, and because it was raining we parked in the last available reserved bay. We just popped in to check the catalogue, and when we got out I noticed a family struggling to get their wheelchair and disabled child out of their car further along the car park. They didn't say anything to us, I don't think they even saw us, and even if they did I would have pointed out that we had just as much right to use that space as they did. But whereas we could easily have walked a bit further, the reserved space would have been very useful to them.
Secondly, it has been well documented on this board, unpleasant situations that have arisen due to the use of badges and people's perceived disability. Not that any confrontation would upset me - I can give as good as I get - but that I would want to avoid any embarassment for my friend.
Maybe it just takes some time to get used to it, as I say, I've just got it.

As for feeling ashamed or embarassed about her disability, that couldn't be more wrong. Upset - often. Bitter - sometimes. Frustrated - frequently. Ashamed - never!
I'm actually very proud of her - proud of the way she has coped with such a debilitating illness in such a positive way that few people would manage.

I posted on this thread and my original one for practical help and advice, not a discussion about my feelings. So to Peter on this thread, and Cattie and Sleepless Saver on the original one - thank you.

OK, so I haven't read the hole thread as it mainly seems to be about whether it should say Disabled or not, but I have a query and apologise if it has already been mentioned in here.

We have 2 cars, one for me and one for my wife (blue badge holder on high rate mobility DLA). I understand that her car would be eligible for a disabled tax disc but if we did that it would mean that I couldn't drive her car without it being on her behalf. I rarely use her car but there are times when I do, either through convenience or necessity. Am I correct in my beleif that in this situation I should not apply for free road tax on her car?

    Thanks.

I have just returned from holiday in Dorset and a lot of the car packs there only allow free parking for blue badge holders if they are exempt from paying road tax! I had never seen any thing like that before = they must have traffic wardens with magnifying glasses to check them all!

Most of the council car parks in south devon charge blue badge holders for parking but you get an extra couple of hours added to your time. In torbay (where we live) you have to apply for a seperate parking permit to enable you to use their car parks for free, but if we cross over into South hams we would still have to pay (or park on the street!)

We are in the same situation, we have 2 cars mine has disabled tax on it and my partner rarely uses it. However there have been times for instance his car has gone in for an MOT/service, he has then used mine to go to work, and yes as far as I am concerned that benefits me No Work = No Money. He could also use it to go shopping, picking up prescriptions and anything else that relates to me.

Could someone please explain how we go about renewing a blue disabled badge?

    Thanks.
  • You need to telephone your local council where you got the badge from originally and ask them how to renew the blue badge. If you get DLA/AA you may need to provide an upto date letter with confirmation of your entitlement.

I just renewed ours last month

I rang local county council, they said they send out a renewal form to my old address but as we moved I forgot to inform them although I did let them know plenty of time before it ran out end of June so we got a new one just before old one ran out.

We did have to fill form out and send £2 admin fee plus passport photo, printed photo will do as long as it look a passport type picture and right size

  • Hi,I am in the process of applying for DLA due to a hopefully temporary (tho at least a year or two) physical disability (agonizingly painful broken back that won't heal and requires pins inserting into spine at least). If successful, which I'm assured I will be,will I be eligible for a Blue badge or mobility allowance? What criteria do you need to fit these reqiurements?
p.s If I got free tax or car they could write disabled down the whole length of it in neon letters for all I care!

Some councils will allow you to get a BB without DLA, many won't without a huge fight, and sometimes court... To get a BB automatically then the relevant qualifying criteria for you would be Higher rate mobility, which generally means you can walk only 50 metres or less, gait and time taken are also considered. What do you mean by motability allowance?

I pay £180 for my tax disk.

Can someone please tell me why someone classed as disabled shouldn't also pay their road tax?
