Blackberry or iphone or something else?

Hi I hope somebody can help me as I am not really up to date with all the new gadgets taht you can get nowadays.

What I want is something that I can use whilst I am out and about or even at home when the kids are on the pc to check and send my hotmail and also to log on to the internet and be able to post on forums like this.

I am not a great mobile user, I just have a really basic Nokia that I use for very occasional calls and a few texts (just on PAYG, and spend about £50 a year!).

Can anyone tell me what is the best gadget I should buy and also if there are any good deals about? I don't want to walk into carphone warehouse and get something costing loads with lots of features that I will never use.

Thansk so much in advance

  • I just got a Blackberry Pearl 1820 yesterday and it's great for email (I also use Hotmail). It's also easy to get the hang of.

The deal I got was: £145 on Orange PAYG plus £20 topup (condition of purchase). For 6 months, if bought from the Orange shop, you get the blackberry services for free (worth £5 a month).

  • I've heard from a couple of sources that T Mobile's internet reception and speed isn't as good as Orange. Also, they have the 8110, which apparently isn't Wifi enabled. Orange has better service than T Mobile.

You can use pages like MSE, yes, apparently but I've not yet done so on mine. I can open attachments on email and use Facebook and Youtube etc.

Yes, you can use it where there's free Wifi but only the 8120, NOT the 8110.

Ive had both, a Blackberry (Curve I think) and an iphone.

Without a shadow of a doubt, I would recommend an iphone. The web browsing is exactly like on your pc/laptop, so you get a whole page view of a web page. The email is utterly reliable, both sending and receiving. And the apps you can download (including loads of free ones) are superb and you will find something for everyone.

I wouldn't class myself as very computer-literate (ie I dont know the correct terminology for things), so you do need to think a bit when you set it up via itunes, but it is the only phone I have ever owned that I wouldn't part with.

Every phone I have owned in the past (nokias, sony ericsson, motorola and blackberry) has been dumped as soon as my contract has finished so I can get my hands on something new. That has all changed with my iphone-nothing comes close in my opinion!

Edit to add: I pay £35 a month, for 600 mins and 500 texts I think, and never use either up. Being on the Internet and sending and receiving emails doesn't cost more. I do have wifi at home, which I would recommend if you think you will use it at home a lot. At shopping centres, you can stand outside Carphone Warehouse and the O2 stores to pick up their free wifi, and there are other places like MacDonalds that offer this too!

Well, I do agree with Veruccasalt that the iPhone is much better for internet browsing. But I use my netbook for that. In my case, the Blackberry is great for trying to keep on top of my emails. SO it depends which you want more; email or internet; both do both though so it's not necessarily either/or. HTH.

Thanks for the info. As I pay so little currently for my mobile phone I don't really want to start to have a big monthly bill are there lower tariffs just for connecting to the web (I am keep my old phone) or is that just a silly idea???

Well, with Orange, if you buy from the Orange shop before 30 June, you get 6 months free Blackberry/internet services (after which it's £5 a month) and it's Wifi enabled so you can browse for free on the move where there are relevant Hotspots.
