crisis loan

Hey, after some advice. I am currently on JSA and have been for about 3months.Husband works full time in forces. How would I apply for a crisis loan. I need to have my brake pads and disc's replaced on my car. We cant get the money any other way (trust me we have tried). I would put it off but without our car we would be stuck

    Hi,

I was looking into a crisis loan too, but from what I found out is that you have to be on an income based benefit and have been so for at least 26 weeks.

    Hi

    Hard question time.

How much are the brake pads and discs?

Are they less than the short break you are looking to book :

thats £130 right there (exc spending money, travel costs)

Do you have your priorities right?

  • Mummyfleming have you tried your bank for a loan or an overdraft?

Sorry to hear that you have suddenly found yourself with serious money worries since the 1st of June. Its amazing how everything can sneak up like that. One minute booking a nice weekend trip to London, the next minute a crisis loan.

Are we not all here to offer advice not judge others?

It seems to be a something that happens a lot on here at the moment?!

I dont have any knowledge of crisis loans unfortunatly but hopefully someone who knows their stuff will be able to answer your question.

Advice indeed, but not in how to defraud the tax payer, or help getting a dodgy claim through!

But if you have genuinely become that desperate within a few weeks of looking to booking a holiday OP, then you can certainly apply for a crisis loan.

Isn't the point of a crisis loan is that it is for an emergency situation. I don't think brakes for the car is an emergency unless you live in the middle of nowhere and have no public transport, even then I think you'd be struggling.

In the old days a crisis loan was used when you were in severe financial hardship and you required help due to a breakdown in the family and perhaps had to move out into other accommodation so needed a bed or a cooker.

If you can afford fuel for the car and insurance then surely you can save up for new brakes and not use it til then. If you can't afford to run a car then don't have one. A car in my opinion is a luxury. I would use public transport until I could afford to run it.

    The point is this.

Less than a few weeks ago you could afford 2 nights at £130. Plus presumably all the other costs of a weekend away, like spending money, eating, travel.

Now, 2 weeks later, you need a "crisis" loan.

    Its reasonable to challenge that.

    Hi there

If your hubby is in the forces-could he ask around his mates to see if any of them can help -I know my hubby does things like swaping the lights to continental etc for anyone who asks. he also has a card to get a discount on car parts etc..
might be worth asking around -its amazing what can get done ;)
He could also approach his boss or welfare even to see about an advance on his wages..I believe they will do this if the reason is valid. Failing that are there any other army families near by who could help out with important journeys until you get the money together ?
    hope its some help
