I don't know how it works now, but it certainly always used to work based on where you'd been living rather than where you were actually living.

Hopefully Taiko will be able to confirm, but it would be worth looking at both the English and the Scottish guides for what to do if you've moved house in the last 3 years ...

If he's ordinarily resident with yourself before the 1st September, then he should be applying to SAAS.

thanks - his current course finishes the first week in July so that is when he is moving up
  • I have two daughters both applying to go to uni this autumn and as a single parent I know I'm going to really struggle financially but am determined they should'nt miss out. I'm waiting to hear from the student loan body, but wonder if there's any extra loans we can apply for to ease the burden if only slightly! My gross income is just slightly over £25k but I think this goes against me? Any ideas anyone? Thanks for reading.

It won't go against you at all?

They will get tution loan and:

    Maintenance Loan: £3,497
    Maintenance Grant: £2,906
    Total: £6,403

Thats plenty to live off. They might get more grants or bursary depending on the uni they are going to.
  • Lokolo, thank you however I believe the maintenance grant is means tested and the full amount you quote applies to a household income of £25k or less...if income's above £25k you're given a 'partial' grant however I have no idea how much this might be?

The amounts above are based on household income of £25k ;)

Plus, the number of dependents you have is also counted. Since both daughters will be students, you should do better than if you were only sending one off.

  • thanks but I haven't seen anywhere where I can state number of dependents - maybe I should contact them direct and try to get an answer?
