It appears their whole banking system has gone down . I tried to make a payment over the phone and it couldnt be authorised. On phoning the bank it appears that they can not access their systems , online banking is down and ATMs arent working either

Yes, they are having system problems0

Yes I've been calling them and trying my card in ATMs. I then went to their own ATM and it was down. Strange!0

And Barclaycard is unavailable as well. How odd.0

Sounds like a main server hardware/application failure. Typical of the banks and other industries, putting all their services in one basket. Should have proper seperacy and no single point of failures.0

Seems like the problem is causing problems at Barclays Stockbrokers also.0

Perhaps Bob Diamond has nicked all the money.
Whatever happened to their chairman, Reg Varney?
Last time I saw him, he was driving a bus!0 -

Well this is classic - i've just tried to go on line with barclays - obviously no joy, so rang telephone banking - to try and do a transfer between accounts.
I have a current account (additions plus, which i use soley for food shopping) with a free £250 overdraft and a further reserve of £250 - i made a card payment today (done a huge food shop) and knew that i would go over the £250 overdraft and into my reserve, i knew the payment would be accepted, and then came home with the intentions of transferring the money out of my e-savings account to put the current account back in credit - this is how i work my account, if i leave too much money in my current account i spend it and i transfer amounts back according to what i've spent.
Anyway, so i'm on the phone to Barclays, got through very easily, to be told that they cannot do a transfer from an e-savings account because its an "on line" account, which is what i was expecting them to say - they have said i'll have to ring back tomorrow to sort out as i will get charged £22 now for going into my reserve!
But, the Barclays Customer Service Assistant then went on to tell me i was a "genuine" barclays customer, what that meant i dont know, we've had the account for years (20+) and that i pre-qualify for a loan and i should take a loan out, i said why, he said to clear up credit cards and overdrafts, i said i havent got any cc bills and my overdraft is free (of charges) because its an additions plus account!
So, they cant move my money, but are quite happy to try and flog me and loan i dont want or need! Classic ....... just hope this problem gets sorted out and quickly.
As Rob has said on the BBC page, these problems happen, but surely it shouldnt take this long to sort!0 -
